Last year, when we posted this, someone joked, "ain't nobody reading all that" — super valid 😅, but somehow it ended up being our community's favorite post, so we're bringing it back for anyone who's new here... 💙

Can anxiety cause an eating disorder? 👇

Anxiety can change the way someone eats — or doesn’t eat. But how do you know when anxiety symptoms are simply affecting appetite and when they may be overlapping with an eating disorder?

Here's what the research tells us:

➡️ Nearly two-thirds of people with eating disorders have at least one lifetime anxiety disorder.

➡️ Up to 65% of people with eating disorders report symptoms of anxiety that appear before or alongside eating disorder symptoms.

If you've ever felt like you're "too old" to ask for help with an eating disorder, you're not alone. 💙

Many adults come to us feeling the pressure to “have it all together.”

But eating disorders don't discriminate against age, and most importantly: recovery isn't something you should be expected to handle by yourself.

Whether you're struggling with body image, life transitions, grief, caregiving responsibilities, or eating disorder behaviors that have followed you for years, your experiences are valid. 🫶

Remember, there is no age limit on recovery, and there is no age limit on asking for help.

What does it look like when obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and an eating disorder overlap? ⬇️

Eating disorder behaviors and OCD can look very similar. They both involve rigid food rules, rituals, and distressing thoughts, which is why it can be so easy to confuse them. 😵‍💫

The overlap is more common than most people realize:

➡️ Up to 41% of individuals with anorexia and bulimia also have OCD

➡️ 18% of all people with an eating disorder will develop OCD in their lifetime, versus 2.3% of the general population.

For example, someone with OCD may insist on eating foods in a certain order or only eat foods with certain ingredients or textures. These behaviors can trigger or intensify an eating disorder, making it difficult to know where OCD compulsions and eating disorder behaviors begin and end.
