Today, we proudly recognize an incredible team member celebrating 8.5 years with our hospital—Robert Smith, better known as “Chef.”

Chef’s dedication, creativity and hard work nourish both our patients and staff each day. Through meals prepared with care and compassion, he helps create a welcoming and healing environment.

Chef shared, “I was hired as the Executive Chef, and that remains my role today—but I’m never above washing dishes when we’re short-staffed. Once a dishwasher, always a dishwasher.” He also noted that he joined River Park to make a difference by providing high-quality, nutritious meals and has taken pride in improving menus and seeing patients truly enjoy the food.

One of his favorite memories? Watching our CEO and CFO get dunked in a dunk tank during a facility event!

Thank you, Chef, for your passion, dedication and the positive impact you make every day. We’re grateful to have you as part of our hospital family—be sure to say hello and thank him when you see him!

Today, on National Cancer Survivors Day, we honor the strength, courage and resilience of cancer survivors everywhere.

A cancer diagnosis impacts not only physical health, but also emotional and mental well-being. Emotional wellness is a vital part of the healing journey during and after treatment. Many survivors face challenges long after treatment ends, making ongoing support, compassion, and hope essential.
We celebrate those who have faced cancer with determination, support those who continue to fight, and recognize the families, caregivers, and healthcare professionals who stand beside them every step of the way.

At our hospital, we are committed to supporting the whole person—mind and body—because every survivor’s story is one of remarkable perseverance and hope.

June is Men’s Health Month—a reminder that mental health is just as important as physical health. Many men face challenges in silence, often feeling pressure to “stay strong” instead of reaching out for support.

This month, we encourage open conversations about mental health, emotional wellness, stress, depression and recovery. Seeking help is a sign of strength—not weakness. Whether it’s checking in with a loved one, speaking to a professional or prioritizing self-care, every step toward wellness matters.

Together, we can help break the stigma surrounding men’s mental health.

Today, we recognize Day of Awareness, a national initiative led by the American Hospital Association to raise awareness about violence in healthcare and promote safer environments for all.

At our psychiatric hospital, we are committed to fostering a culture of safety, respect and dignity for patients, staff and visitors alike. Violence in healthcare impacts caregivers, patients, families and communities, making awareness, prevention and education more important than ever.

Through compassion, a trauma-informed approach, de-escalation practices and teamwork, we strive to create an environment where healing can occur safely and respectfully.

Join us in supporting healthcare workers and advocating for safe spaces where both care and recovery can thrive.

Today, we’re proud to spotlight one of the dedicated nurses on our 1E unit, Sandra Zerkle. For the past three years, Sandra has provided compassionate care, structured support and unwavering dedication to the patients she serves.

Her ability to build trust, advocate for her patients and create meaningful connections has made a lasting impact—not only on those in her care, but also on her colleagues.

Sandra began her nursing career on a mother-baby unit at a local hospital and later spent time working in the emergency department. While she valued that experience, she always felt drawn to psychiatric care—and we’re grateful she followed that passion.

Her teammates consistently share their appreciation for Sandra, describing her as knowledgeable, dependable and a vital part of the unit. They note that she delivers high-quality care and creates a safe, structured environment where patients feel supported. Her patients respect her and know she always has their best interests at heart.

We are truly grateful for Sandra’s commitment and the positive difference she continues to make at our facility. Thank you, Sandra, for your hard work, kindness and dedication over the past three years—we’re lucky to have you on our team.

June is PTSD Awareness Month.

Trauma can leave invisible wounds—but no one has to heal alone. River Park Hospital is committed to supporting individuals and families affected by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

PTSD is real. Recovery is possible. Help is available.

We recognize the strength it takes to live with PTSD, and the courage it takes to seek support. By raising awareness and encouraging open conversations about mental health, we can help break the stigma surrounding trauma and treatment.

This month, we stand together to raise awareness, reduce stigma and remind our community that healing is possible. You are not alone and support is available.

Take care of yourself. Check in on others. And remember: seeking support is a courageous first step toward healing.
