✨ Therapy Thursday ✨

Ever wonder what happens during an occupational therapy session—and more importantly, why we do these activities?

Today's spotlight is on midline crossing with weighted balls while in tall kneeling. While it may look like play, every movement has a purpose!

🧠 What we're working on:
• Bilateral coordination by encouraging both arms to work together.
• Gross grasp and upper extremity strength through lifting and releasing weighted balls.
• Core stability and balance while maintaining a tall kneeling position.
• Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) by practicing functional skills that translate to everyday tasks, like loading groceries into a shopping cart.

💚 Why it matters:
Occupational therapy uses meaningful, purposeful activities to help children build the skills they need for greater independence at home, at school, and in the community. Every session is designed with real-life goals in mind.

Follow along for our new series as we share the "what" and the "why" behind the activities happening across UCP and our programs.

To the families, staff, and advocates she serves every single day, Cheryl is a community builder, a role model, and a steadfast friend.

Whether she's leading from the front lines at community events, telethons, and advocacy panels, cheering alongside families at local hockey games and fundraiser nights, or bringing joy and laughter to the team (oversized photo-booth glasses and all!) -- Cheryl leads with her whole heart.

For four decades, she has dedicated her life to ensuring "Life Without Limits for Individuals of All Abilities"—building not just an organization, but a true family along the way!

This addition strengthens a shared commitment to addressing one of the most significant challenges facing our rapidly growing community – affordable and accessible housing. United Way leadership is confident that their programs and those of our nonprofit partners illustrate a powerful collaborative designed to make meaningful progress in addressing critical needs.

This selection of partners is in alignment with the voice of the local Madison County community reflected in the findings from the most recent United Way’s Community Needs Assessment. It clearly shows how the critical issue of housing continues impacts many of the individuals and families this group collectively serves. It no longer affects only those who live in poverty but is stretching into another 24% of our population that includes essential workers in tourism and hospitality, childcare, education, law enforcement and more. Housing affordability is an economic imperative and vital to stabilizing and building independence and resiliency among those that, today, need our help and tomorrow have a chance to contribute mightily.

“United Way partnerships represent a strategic and intentional response to what our community has told us,” said Daniel Kasambira, CEO and President of United Way Madison County. “When housing becomes unstable, every other aspect of life becomes fragile. Our own United Way direct services and this particular mix of agencies strengthen our ability to respond to these challenging environments that come along with growth, empower investments to create long-term stability for families, and build sustainable growth.”

Who remembers staying up to watch the local UCP telethon broadcasts? Before the Internet, The telephone was our biggest way to connect with the community! For many in the area, the telethon was a staple in their homes. While the broadcast may be a memory, the mission continues.

In celebration of these memories, both past and future, we are going to spend the next 4 weeks celebrating how far we've come.
