September is National Recovery Month. When I chose to become a counselor specializing in substance use, my goal was simple. I wanted to better understand addiction so I could help someone very special to me who suffered from alcoholism. September is a special month for us. Though he ultimately lost his battle with this disease, his life and struggle remind me why this work matters..
To those currently in active addiction but still hoping recovery may one day be possible, please know you are not forgotten. Our hearts, compassion, and prayers for healing are with you. Recovery is not easy. I know that now more than ever. I've witnessed the pain, the setbacks, the courage, and the incredible strength it takes to choose recovery. So this recovery month, let's remember one very important thing. Addiction may be a part of someone's story, but it does not have to be the ending.
Recovery is possible. Healing is possible. A new life is possible. And sometimes the most powerful step a person can take is simply believing that tomorrow can be different from today.πππ
