Colorectal cancer leads to more deaths than any other cancer in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, a vast majority of colorectal cancer deaths can be preventedโ€”yet many people are not taking advantage of screening options.

โ€œColorectal cancer is often called a silent cancer because it rarely presents with symptoms,โ€ says Dr. Megan Morriss, a general surgeon at Allen County Regional Hospital and Anderson County Hospital. โ€œIf youโ€™re 45 or older or have any family history of polyps or colon cancer, donโ€™t take your chances. Just get screened.โ€

A colonoscopy is the most common and effective screening tool for colon cancer. Read more from Dr. Morriss about colonoscopies and colorectal cancer risks: https://heyor.ca/qyDU10

Your impact is felt far beyond our hospital wallsโ€”in the hope you restore, the lives you save, and the loved ones who return to their families.

Our promise is kept in the daily commitment of our doctors. It is a calling defined by quiet, personal sacrifice: the missed dinners, the long nights at the bedside, and a responsibility that doesnโ€™t end when the shift does. We recognize the physicians who show up, who become the steady anchor a family needs, and who offer a reassuring presence that says: โ€œWe are in this together.โ€

To our physician partners: Thank you for the expertise you bring, the sacrifices you make, and the humanity you offer every person in your care.

Congratulations to Brandi, Allen County Regional Hospital's 2025 Employee of the Year! Brandi works as a registered nurse at Allen County Regional Hospitalโ€“Iola Clinic and received multiple nominations from her team.

Over the past two years, Brandi has learned all aspects of the clinic and is always willing to step in and help when another team member is out for the day or just needs an extra hand. Patients are always thankful for her ability to solve problems and quick follow through.

โ€œBrandi can juggle multiple tasks throughout the day and still have a smile on her face,โ€ one nomination reads. โ€œShe has received lots of praise from the local pharmacy and patients who really enjoy her positive attitude and willingness to help others.โ€

Like many other nurses, Brandi's passion for patient care began in her youth when she stepped up to support loved ones with medical needs. She remembers those early experiences, and to this day, her enthusiasm for her work and caring for others is unwavering.

"Transitioning to this clinic role has been transformative," says Brandi. "The environment here feels distinct; I sense that my efforts, no matter how small, genuinely impact our patients' lives, and I am fully committed to making sure patients have a great experience at our clinic. It's important that our patients trust and know they can rely on us to provide the best care."

Congratulations, Brandi! Thank you for going above and beyond and for helping make Allen County Regional Hospital's Iola Clinic an extraordinary place for patients, providers, and staff. ๐Ÿ’™

For decades, heart disease was widely viewed as a manโ€™s disease. That misconception lingered until the early 2000s, when research found that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined.

Dr. Tracy Stevens, a cardiologist and medical director at Saint Luke's Muriel I. Kauffman Women's Heart Center, recently sat down with the Iola Register to share heart disease risk factors and awareness.

โ€œWe often make the mistake of thinking that if we feel well, our blood pressure must be fine,โ€ Stevens said. โ€œIt is the silent killer, and monitoring it is the single most important action you can take to protect your heart. Heart disease does not discriminateโ€”it can affect all women.โ€
