In 1978, the founders opened the doors to one of Jacksonville’s greatest non-profits, Gateway. Over thirty years ago, this group of recovering alcoholics wanted their “miracle of sobriety,” which was achieved through the success of 12 Step recovery and treatment brought to the Jacksonville community for those suffering from addiction, especially those without means to pay. They had an overwhelming will to heal, and so they found the way. Gateway was founded by people in recovery for people seeking recovery. Today, Gateway has become a recognized leader in the treatment of addictive disorders for adults, adolescents and veterans, touching the lives of over 300,000 people in treatment and prevention services.

✨Patient Testimonial ✨

Justina first came to Gateway in March of 2021. After completing her residential stay and sometime in sober living, she felt confident in her sobriety. As the years went by, she slowly stopped going to recovery meetings and fell out of touch with her sober community. It was easy for her to start hanging out with old friends who weren't in recovery. When life presented her with difficulties, she found she had lost the tools and support to say no to a drink. 4 years of sobriety was gone in the blink of an eye. Her relapse led to a spiral of self-destruction over a 3-month period; in which she lost jobs, wrecked her vehicle, and began the cycle of constantly feeling sick from withdrawals. One day, while intoxicated at work, a coworker drove her back to the front doors of Gateway.

At the beginning of her second stay with us, Justina was angry and upset with herself. Like so many others, she had good sobriety but strayed away from her recovery program and found herself back in treatment. But during her second stay at Gateway, she decided she had learned her lesson about the subtle insanity of the first drink. She worked the 12 steps and built an even stronger foundation for her recovery than she had the first time. After completing her residential stay, she moved into Gateway's Transitional Recovery Housing program, then to the Edgewood sober residences where she currently resides.

Justina quickly found employment and enjoys working in a kitchen setting. Since arriving, she has been promoted and looks forward to training new employees at new locations. Her future goals are to save for a new car and, eventually, a new place to live. Her sobriety is precious and the central focus of her life today. She knows that if she puts her recovery first, everything else will fall into place.

Gateway was honored to attend a community homelessness outreach event coordinated by Downtown Ecumenical Services Council - DESC , connecting individuals with valuable local resources and support services. 🤝

At Gateway, we believe everyone deserves access to hope, healing, and a path forward. Thank you to all the organizations, volunteers, and community partners who came together to make a difference for our neighbors experiencing homelessness in Jacksonville.

With over 25 years of experience in providing job readiness training and reentry services in Florida, Operation New Hope is a nonprofit organization dedicated to breaking the cycles of poverty and incarceration. ONH connects people to the workforce, their families, and their communities. Through various programs, Operation New Hope equips participants with the tools they need to successfully reenter society or establish new opportunities through employment assistance, job training, case management, mental health support, and other wraparound services.

Headquartered in Jacksonville, FL., ONH has served more than 20,000 people since 1999, helping them overcome barriers to employment and build stable, productive futures. With locations in Orlando, Tampa, St. Petersburg, and the Space Coast, Operation New Hope strengthens communities, reduces recidivism, and creates lasting pathways to second chances.

Born and raised in Jacksonville, Mike spent years fighting a battle that started long before he realized what he was up against. Picking up his first drink at just 15 years old, alcohol eventually shifted from a social outlet to a heavy, isolating chore. By his mid-30s, Mike was drinking around the clock, ultimately losing his job and his home and finding himself living out of his car.

Mike walked through the doors at Gateway seeking a lifeline when he felt entirely hopeless. Through intensive counseling, unwavering staff support, and our Transitional Recovery Housing program, Mike found more than just sobriety; he found a completely new perspective and a new lease on life. He learned to embrace a growth mindset, reframing discomfort as progress and letting go of the fear that once fueled his addiction.

Today, just seven months after feeling entirely defeated, Mike is living a life he is truly proud of. With multiple job offers on the table and a secure place to call home in Gateway’s transitional housing program, his future is brighter than ever. "I realized I drank because I was afraid," Mike shares. "Today, I’m not afraid anymore, and I credit that to my recovery." Stories like Mike’s remind us why this work matters every single day.
