How you spend the first 30 minutes after you wake up can really set the tone for your day — your energy, focus, cravings, and even how well you sleep that night. Many of us reach for a phone and coffee before our feet hit the floor, and both can quietly work against the hormones you're trying to support. Here's a gentler order to try:
Hydrate before caffeine. After 7–8 hours without water you wake up mildly dehydrated, and that alone can feel a lot like fatigue. A big glass of water first thing helps you rehydrate and supports your natural morning cortisol rhythm.
Get some morning sunlight. Light on your face is one of the strongest signals for your circadian rhythm. It supports healthy morning cortisol, helps wind down the melatonin you don't need during the day, and sets the clock that supports sleep at night.
Ease off your phone. Scrolling first thing can switch on a stress response before you've even had water. Those first quiet minutes are a nice window to let your body wake up gently.
None of this takes extra time — it's the same 30 minutes you already have, just in an order your body tends to appreciate. Which of these three would be hardest for you to give up?
