Anchors are reminders that help bring us back to the present moment — back into safety, connection, and the here and now. 🌈

I created this rainbow rock as one of my anchors. A reminder that the storms in my past are over, and that I am safe in this moment. It also has the lyrics to a song called "Rainbow," which was introduced to me by and reminds me of someone who helped me experience safety, connection, and secure relationships in a deeper way.

Sometimes anchors are objects, songs, scents, places, or people. They help ground us when life feels overwhelming.

Healing often looks less like becoming someone new…
and more like finding your way back home to yourself.
At Alongside You Counseling, we often talk about shifting away from the pressure of “shoulds” — how we should be feeling, performing, coping, or showing up — and instead building a deeper relationship with ourselves rooted in curiosity, compassion, and authenticity.
Self-care is not one-size-fits-all.
Sometimes what we truly need is different than what we think we’re supposed to need.
So here’s an invitation:
Pause for a moment.
Take a breath.
Check in with yourself.
Ask:
“What do I need right now?”
Then listen without judgment.
Maybe your body needs movement.
Maybe it needs rest.
Maybe it needs connection, nourishment, creativity, quiet, boundaries, support… or simply permission to slow down.
The more we practice listening inward, the more we learn to care for ourselves in ways that are genuine and sustainable rather than performative.
You may be surprised by what you discover when you give yourself space to truly notice.

An anchor can be:
• an object you hold
• your breath
• a place
• music
• a person
• a small moment of calm

They’re easy to miss—

• sunlight on your skin
• a deep breath
• a kind smile
• a quiet moment
• the feeling of being cozy

Your brain is naturally wired to scan for danger…
but you can gently begin to notice safety too.
