💜 June is Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month 💜
Did you know that Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia, affecting millions of individuals and families worldwide?
This month, we encourage everyone to take steps to support brain health:
🧠 Stay physically active
🥗 Eat a balanced, heart-healthy diet
📚 Keep your mind engaged through learning and social activities
❤️ Know the warning signs and seek medical advice if concerns arise
Together, we can raise awareness, support caregivers, and promote early detection and treatment.
Join us in wearing purple this month to show your support for those affected by Alzheimer's disease.

"I was reminded recently of the old saying many of us heard from our mothers: “Don’t put anything in your ear smaller than your elbow.” Of course, few of us keep this command perfectly. Q tips, bobby pins, fingers, match sticks, and the occasional bead somehow find their way into many an ear canal.

Recently, I got a call from a worst-case scenario of this transgression. A young lady had been rushing around doing a few things while simultaneously cleaning her ear canal with a Q tip. As she turned quickly her elbow hit the wall jamming the Q tip deep into her ear canal breaking through her ear drum and disrupting the bones of hearing.

This trauma left her nearly deaf in that ear and in tremendous pain. In addition, a nearly constant loud ringing in the ear started up. After many weeks of enduring these symptoms, some of the hearing returned, the pain eased, and the ringing subsided somewhat. She is currently looking at possible surgery to partially restore the middle ear anatomy.

Thankfully, few have this level of consequences for introducing Q tips into the delicate ear canal. Still, we strongly recommend abandoning Q tip usage in the ear canal. For most, ear wax (cerumen) works its own way out. For those where it doesn’t, over-the-counter drops that liquify the wax followed by gentle irrigation (at home or at your physician’s office) usually does the trick with much less danger..."

“Doc, I’m starting to think my brain is slipping. I blank on people’s names and can’t think of words that I use all the time. I’m only 59; is there something I can do to keep my brain working better for as long as the rest of my body is around?”

Mr. Dalton was expressing an extremely common concern that hits almost all of us as the years go by. Honestly, the sooner it occurs to us the better, because that gives us a better chance of catching the problem early and putting into practice those habits that can help us maintain good brain function. There are several things that help, and they aren’t pricey supplements and prescriptions which often make promises they can’t keep. Oddly enough, physical exercise still shows the most proven benefits for our brain of any habit you can adopt, and the earlier in life we adopt it the better. But even late in the game it can do an amazing amount of good. It has been rightly observed that robust exercise often benefits cognitive scores substantially more than even the newer anti-amyloid meds, and without the significant side effects.

“There is a quote by Robert Butler of the National Institute on Aging. “If exercise could be packaged in a pill, it would be the single most widely prescribed and beneficial medicine in the nation.” Consider just a few of the benefits:
· Improves your mood. In studies, regular aerobic exercise did as well as an anti-depressant in treating depression.
· Helps prevent diabetes. Multiple studies show that both pre-diabetes and diabetes are prevented, delayed or improved substantially by regular exercise.
· Helps delay or reduce the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. We all want our brain to function well for as long as our bodies.
· Promotes weight management, improves energy, enhances sleep and helps maintain joint health and mobility…”
