Sometimes the way to their hearts is through GOOD COMFORT FOOD!

At our Ringwood home, our smaller 9-bed The Heathers home, we decided to order Chinese food for our residents.

And let us tell you… they LOVED it! 😋🥡

There’s something special about being able to say, “What sounds good tonight?” and then actually make it happen.

It doesn’t always have to be a fancy meal.

Sometimes it’s Chinese food.
Sometimes it’s pizza.
Sometimes it’s a favorite dessert.
Sometimes it’s Mom’s old recipe.

It’s those little things that make a house feel like home.

One of the things we love about our smaller homes is that we can get to know our residents personally—their likes, dislikes, favorite foods, favorite routines, and the little things that make them smile.

Because senior care isn't just about meeting someone's basic needs.

It's about knowing the person.

And sometimes… a good plate of Chinese food is the perfect way to show someone you care.

🧠 10 DEMENTIA SIGNS TO WATCH FOR IN YOUR PARENTS

Sometimes the changes are subtle.
Sometimes we explain them away as “just getting older.”

But if you’re noticing several of these changes in a parent or loved one, it may be worth talking with their doctor.

1️⃣ Memory loss that affects daily life
They repeatedly ask the same questions or forget conversations that recently happened.

2️⃣ Difficulty with familiar tasks
Things they’ve done for years suddenly become confusing—cooking a familiar meal, using the remote, paying bills, or managing medications.

3️⃣ Getting confused about time or place
They may lose track of dates, seasons, where they are, or how they got somewhere.

4️⃣ Trouble finding the right words
They struggle to follow or participate in conversations, repeat themselves, or frequently forget common words.

5️⃣ Misplacing things in unusual places
Keys in the refrigerator. The remote in a drawer. Their wallet somewhere completely unexpected—and they can't retrace their steps.

6️⃣ Changes in judgment
Unusual financial decisions, falling for scams, inappropriate purchases, or suddenly making decisions that seem very out of character.

7️⃣ Withdrawal from activities they once enjoyed
They stop going to church, meeting friends, playing cards, gardening, or participating in hobbies they previously loved.

8️⃣ Changes in mood or personality
Increased anxiety, suspicion, irritability, fear, apathy, or personality changes that seem unusual for them.

9️⃣ Difficulty with planning or problem-solving
Paying bills, following a recipe, balancing a checkbook, or handling a familiar routine becomes increasingly difficult.

🔟 Losing the ability to navigate familiar places
Getting lost driving to a familiar location or becoming confused in a neighborhood or store they know well.

❤️ HERE'S THE IMPORTANT PART:

One of these signs doesn't automatically mean dementia. Some changes can be caused by medications, depression, sleep problems, vitamin deficiencies, infections, or other medical conditions.

But if you're seeing a pattern of changes, don't ignore it.

👉 Talk with your parent. Talk with their doctor. Pay attention to the changes.

Early evaluation can help families understand what's happening and plan for the future.

And remember: Your parent isn't “being difficult.” They may be struggling with something they don't fully understand themselves. ❤️

And you don't have to navigate this journey alone.

🏡 The Heathers Senior Homes is here as a resource for families.

If your parent or loved one is struggling with memory loss, dementia, or needs a safe, comfortable, home-like environment with personalized senior care, we’re available to help you explore your options.

Whether you’re just starting to ask questions or you're trying to determine what type of care your loved one needs, reach out to us.

❤️ Sometimes the first step is simply having someone to talk to.
