A trend worth knowing: breast cancer incidence has been rising, and the increase is being driven in part by younger women.

-Recent data show incidence rising faster in women under 50 than in women 50 and older
-Roughly 10-16% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are younger than 50
-Researchers point to factors like delayed childbearing, lower breastfeeding rates, rising obesity, alcohol use, and physical inactivity as contributors to this shift

💡 What you can do: know your family history, understand your personal risk factors, don't dismiss changes in your body because you feel "too young," and talk to a doctor if something feels off — regardless of your age.

That's a health equity issue we need to talk about.

-Black women have a lower rate of being diagnosed with breast cancer than white women, yet face a 38% higher risk of dying from it
-American Indian/Alaska Native women have seen death rates stay flat over the past few decades, even as rates have declined for other groups
-These gaps are driven by unequal access to screening, delayed diagnoses, differences in tumor biology, and systemic barriers to quality care — not biology alone

Awareness Month should also be a call to close these gaps: through access to care, culturally competent screening outreach, and continued research into equitable treatment.

The facts:
-Breast cancer death rates have dropped about 44% since 1989 — largely thanks to earlier detection, greater awareness, and better treatment
-Women who get regular screenings have a significantly lower risk of dying from breast cancer than those who don't
-When caught early (localized stage), survival outcomes are far better than when it's found after it has spread

Talk to your doctor about when you should start screening — most guidelines recommend beginning regular mammograms around age 40–45, but personal risk factors can change that timeline. Call Women's Imaging Center to schedule a mammogram: 863-688-2334

Here's why this matters: breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the U.S. (aside from skin cancers), making up roughly 3 in 10 new female cancer diagnoses each year.

📊 By the numbers:
About 1 in 8 women (≈13%) in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in their lifetime
Over 320,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women this year
Less than 1% of breast cancers occur in men — but it does happen, and awareness matters for everyone

Awareness isn't just a ribbon — it's a reminder to know your body, know your risk, and talk to your doctor. Call Women's Imaging Center to schedule a mammogram: 863-688-2334

A breast MRI isn't recommended for everyone, but it can be an important screening tool for women at higher risk of breast cancer. It may be recommended if you have a strong family history of breast cancer, a known genetic mutation such as BRCA1 or BRCA2, a lifetime breast cancer risk of about 20% or greater, a personal history of certain breast cancers, or extremely dense breast tissue in some situations.

Breast MRI is often used in addition to a mammogram, not as a replacement. Your provider may also recommend it to evaluate an abnormal finding on a mammogram or ultrasound, assess the extent of a newly diagnosed breast cancer, or monitor your response to treatment.

Women are at a higher risk for osteoporosis because bone loss accelerates after menopause as estrogen levels decline. Over time, bones can become weaker and more likely to break, often without any warning signs.

A DEXA scan is the most effective way to measure bone density and detect osteoporosis early, before a fracture occurs. If you're over 65 or have risk factors for osteoporosis, talk with your provider about whether it's time for a DEXA scan.

Mammogram recommendations vary based on your age and personal risk factors:

• Ages 40–44: You may want to begin annual mammograms.
• Ages 45–54: Annual mammograms are recommended.
• Age 55 and older: Continue screening every year.

If you have a family history of breast cancer, dense breasts, or other risk factors, your provider may recommend starting earlier or screening more often. Talk with your healthcare provider about the screening schedule that's right for you.

Breast density refers to the amount of dense tissue compared to fatty tissue in your breasts. Despite being pretty common, dense breast tissue can make it harder for a mammogram to detect certain abnormalities because both dense tissue and cancer appear white on the images.

If you have dense breasts, your provider may recommend additional imaging, such as a breast ultrasound or breast MRI, to give a more complete picture. Knowing your breast density can help you make more informed decisions about your breast health and screening plan.

Although they sound similar, a bone scan and a bone density test are used for different reasons.

🦴 Bone Density Test (DEXA Scan)
Measures bone strength and density to help detect osteoporosis and assess fracture risk.

🔍 Bone Scan
Looks for abnormalities in the bones, such as fractures, infections, arthritis, tumors, or areas of cancer spread.

In simple terms:
✅ A bone density test checks how strong your bones are.
✅ A bone scan checks for injury, disease, or abnormal bone activity.

Myth!

The majority of biopsies result in benign (non-cancerous) findings. The procedure is simply a diagnostic step to closely examine tissue and definitively rule out cancer.

A biopsy may be order for:

-A suspicious mass that cannot be felt on breast exam
-A mammogram showing suspicious clusters of small calcium deposits
-A distorted structure of breast tissue
-A new mass or area of calcium deposits present at a previous surgery site
-A preference for a non-surgical method of assessment
