Dr. Uhl is a Professor in the UK College of Health Sciences with 41 years of experience as a physical therapist and athletic trainer. He is passionate about helping people find ways to stay active and build healthy habits for life. We’re thrilled to have his expertise on the Board as we continue to advance our mission!

University of Kentucky (UK) Shoulder to Shoulder Global (STSG) Ecuador
Physical Therapy Team Returns from Santo Domingo, Ecuador

For 18 years, University of Kentucky physical therapy (UK PT) teams have traveled to Ecuador for service-learning.

The August 2026 team included three physical therapists who are UK PT graduates and repeat clinical instructors in Ecuador: Charity Pinkston, Meg Zeigenfuss and Audrey Johnson, with two current PT students, Gracie Bowman and Austin Keith.

The team began with two days at the University of Kentucky-founded and funded Rehabilitation Center of Excellence at the newly expanded Centro de Salud Hombro a Hombro, which was formally dedicated in May 2026.

They worked alongside staff physical therapist Flavia Yepez to distribute wheelchairs and other mobility equipment, provide follow-up care for our existing patient population, and participate in co-treatment consultations for more complex patients on Flavia’s caseload.

The team also traveled to the Highlands region south of the capital city of Quito, joined by UK undergraduate and public health students working on clean-water initiatives and other community service projects. Opportunities for cultural immersion and reflection, a recreational day in Baños, and a tour of cultural and historic sites in Quito enriched the experience.

The Ecuador service becomes a meaningful inflection point in students’ professional and personal development- expanding not only their clinical perspective, but also their awareness of underserved communities, collaboration and culture which will carry them to the communities they will serve throughout their careers.

Shout out to a PT team from the University of Colorado physical therapy program who was recently welcomed to our clinic with their first team of students.

This sustained University of Kentucky service continues!
