Ladies, lifting isn't about getting bulky. It's about staying strong for the next 40 years.

Muscle mass naturally declines with age, and bone loss speeds up in the years around menopause. Resistance training is one of the best-studied ways to push back on both.

Getting started:

→ Two to three strength sessions a week is a solid goal
→ Focus on big movements: squats, hinges, pushes, pulls, carries
→ Add weight gradually as moves feel easier
→ Pair it with enough protein to support recovery
→ Form first, then load

Share this with a friend who's been meaning to start.

Protein gets all the attention. Fiber might be the nutrient most of us are actually missing.

Only about 7% of U.S. adults meet the recommended fiber intake, which is roughly 22 to 34 grams a day depending on age and s*x.

Fiber feeds the healthy bacteria in your gut, helps you feel full longer and slows how fast sugar hits your bloodstream.

Easy ways to add more:

→ Beans or lentils a few times a week
→ Berries, apples and pears with the skin on
→ Swap white grains for oats, barley or brown rice
→ Add vegetables to one more meal a day
→ Go slow and drink more water as you increase it

Save this for your next grocery run.

"Will this actually work for me?" Asked weekly in my exam room.

Johns Hopkins pooled 64 clinical trials of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs (semaglutide, dulaglutide, liraglutide, exenatide) — same results across age, race, ethnicity, starting weight, and blood sugar.

One exception: in s*x-split trials, women lost ~10.9% of starting weight vs ~6.8% for men. Works for everyone — a bit more for women. (Tirzepatide, a dual GIP/GLP-1 drug, wasn't included.)

My take: the consistency matters more than the gap. Reassuring for women — especially around menopause. For men, the lever is staying with it — most quit within months.

Fine print: only 6 of 64 trials split results by s*x (association, not head-to-head). Proposed explanations like estrogen effects are unproven hypotheses.

Shorter days are here, and that matters for more than your mood.

Your skin makes vitamin D from sunlight. But at our latitude, the winter sun sits too low for your skin to make much of it from roughly November through February, even on clear days.

A few things to know:

→ Food sources are limited: fatty fish like salmon and trout, eggs and fortified milk
→ Levels vary a lot from person to person
→ A simple blood test shows where you actually stand
→ More isn't always better, so test before you supplement

Have you ever had your vitamin D checked? Let us know below.

A "normal" cholesterol panel doesn't always tell the whole story.

Standard labs measure how much cholesterol is in your blood. ApoB counts something different: the number of particles that can carry cholesterol into artery walls. Each of those particles carries one ApoB.

Why it's worth knowing:

→ Two people with the same LDL can have very different particle counts
→ ApoB is a simple blood test
→ Many lipid experts now see it as a useful add-on for understanding heart risk
→ Sleep, exercise, fiber and body composition all play a role

Have you heard of ApoB before? Tell us in the comments.

The scale tells you what you weigh. It doesn't tell you what that weight is made of.

Two people can weigh the same and carry very different amounts of muscle and body fat. And when you start strength training, it's common for the scale to barely move while your body is changing.

Other ways to track progress:

→ Waist measurement once or twice a month
→ How your clothes fit
→ Getting stronger at the same lifts
→ Energy and sleep quality
→ A body composition scan that estimates muscle and fat separately

Weigh-ins can still be useful. They're just one piece of the picture.

How do you track your progress? Tell us below.

Stress isn't just in your head. It can show up in your sleep, your cravings and your energy.

Cortisol is your body's main stress hormone, and in short bursts it's useful. It helps you wake up, focus and handle a challenge. The trouble starts when stress never really shuts off.

Ongoing stress can make it harder to sleep, push cravings toward quick sugar and make healthy routines tougher to stick with.

Small ways to bring it down:

→ A 10-minute walk outside, especially in daylight
→ A few minutes of slow breathing before bed
→ Regular meals with protein so you're not running on empty
→ A set wind-down time away from screens
→ Movement you enjoy, including strength training

Most adults fall far short on fiber, and it may matter more than you think.

In a large Lancet review, people who ate the most fiber had a 15% lower risk of death from any cause than people who ate the least (observational data). The biggest benefits showed up at about 25–29 grams a day.

In our new article, Dr. Belkoff covers:

→ How much fiber you actually need
→ What soluble fiber does for cholesterol
→ How fiber helps with weight management
→ Why the Palouse is a local fiber goldmine

Cardio gets most of the credit for a longer life. The research on strength training is getting hard to ignore.

In large observational studies, people who do muscle-strengthening exercise have about 10–17% lower risk of early death, heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes. The biggest drop showed up at just 30–60 minutes a week.

In our new article, Dr. Belkoff breaks down:

→ How much strength training you really need
→ Why it's not too late to build muscle after 50
→ What a major trial showed for bone density after menopause
→ Where protein fits in

About 1 in 3 U.S. adults regularly gets less than the 7 hours of sleep the CDC recommends.

Sleep isn't downtime. It's when your body recovers from training, regulates hunger hormones and resets blood sugar control. Short sleep makes everything else harder, including weight loss.

A few habits that help:

→ Keep the same wake time, even on weekends
→ Get outside light early in the day
→ Cut off caffeine by early afternoon
→ Keep the bedroom cool, dark and quiet
→ Go easy on alcohol, which breaks up sleep

If you snore loudly or wake up tired no matter how long you sleep, that's worth bringing up with your provider.

How many hours are you really getting? Tell us below.
