Founded in 1938, Wilcox Medical Center is a not-for-profit hospital dedicated to providing the Kauai community with accessible, quality health care. ne, neurology, OB-GYN, oncology, orthopedics, pediatrics and urology. Its 20-bed emergency department is the first neighbor island facility to obtain a Level III Trauma designation and serves as the island’s Primary Stroke Center. The medical center also has four birthing suites, seven intensive care beds and 20 same-day surgery beds. The American Heart Association has recognized Wilcox in three areas of excellence: stroke (S) – gold plus award and honor roll elite plus, heart failure (HF) – gold plus award, and atrial fibrillation (AFIB) – gold award. Wilcox has also received the Healthgrades 2017 Outstanding Patient Experience Award, putting it among the top 15 percent of hospitals nationwide; an “A” in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades; and is recognized as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures by The Joint Commission.

A memorable summer of learning, mentorship, and career exploration has come to an end for our Health Careers Summer Internship participants on Kauaʻi. 🌺

Over the past six weeks, interns at Wilcox Medical Center and Kauaʻi Medical Clinic gained firsthand exposure to the healthcare field, connected with experienced professionals, and explored the many ways they can make a difference in the lives of patients and families.

From shadowing team members to experiencing different clinical and nonclinical settings, each intern brought enthusiasm, curiosity, and a willingness to learn throughout the program.

Mahalo to our interns for their dedication this summer, and mahalo to the mentors and staff who helped make this experience possible. Congratulations on reaching this milestone, and we wish you all the best in your future endeavors! 👏

🎪🌱 A little fun, a lot of appreciation, and plenty of reasons to celebrate.

Wilcox Medical Center employees came together for this year’s Summer Carnival, "Harvesting Happiness and Appreciation," a special event recognizing the people who help make our medical center and community stronger every day. The afternoon featured locally grown products, a farmers market, fresh food and treats, games, activities, and plenty of opportunities to connect with colleagues. Even Star, Wilcox's hospital facility dog, got in on the fun.

From friendly competition to photo booth snapshots, the carnival was a chance to step away from the day-to-day, recharge, and celebrate the teamwork that makes Wilcox such a special place!

🌿 Caring for Kauaʻi means caring for the environment we all share.

Wilcox Medical Center has been recognized with the American Society for Health Care Engineering's 2026 Energy to Care Award for achievements in sustainability. As part of that recognition, Wilcox earned the program's highest honor, the Sustainability Champion Award, for the first time and received the Sustained Performance Award for the third consecutive year for meeting energy standards.

From our solar farm with more than 3,500 panels to energy-efficient lighting upgrades and extensive recycling efforts, our team continues to invest in a more sustainable future for our island community.

🌟 Meet Orion Magaoay, a participant in Hawaiʻi Pacific Health's Health Careers Summer Internship Program, who is gaining hands-on experience at Wilcox Medical Center and Kauaʻi Medical Clinic.

Born and raised on Kauaʻi, Orion is spending his summer exploring the field of medical imaging and deepening his understanding of healthcare.

A 2025 graduate of Island School and a rising sophomore at Tufts University, Orion applied to the program to gain hands-on hospital experience while giving back to the community that raised him.

"As someone who was born in Kauaʻi and wishes to give back to the community, I feel very passionate about HPH's mission of creating a healthier Hawaiʻi and serving patients from all walks of life."

Orion has long been interested in healthcare, but his passion grew after volunteering at Kauaʻi Oncology during high school, where he witnessed firsthand the impact healthcare professionals have on patients' lives.

One of his favorite experiences this summer has been working at Kauaʻi Medical Clinic in Kōloa.

"I was fortunate enough to treat patients that were family friends. Since they played a role in raising me as a kid, it felt rewarding to give back and play a role in helping them feel better."

His biggest takeaway?

"No matter how good an expert you are, there will always be something you don't know. That's why quality patient care is a team effort."

From gaining hands-on experience in medical imaging to serving members of his own community, Orion's internship has provided a meaningful look at the power of teamwork, compassion, and lifelong learning in healthcare.

🚲💙 Hundreds of Kauaʻi families came together for the 11th annual Wilcox Keiki Bike Safety Day, a community tradition that promotes safe riding, healthy activity, and family fun.

Keiki received free helmet fittings, learned important bike safety skills, completed obstacle courses, and explored hands-on educational activities. Nearly 40 children also went home with brand-new bikes thanks to the generosity of Wilcox employees and community donors.

Mahalo to our staff, physicians, volunteers, and community partners for helping create a safer, healthier future for Kauaʻi's keiki.

🧡 Congratulations to Wilcox Medical Center Imaging Manager Summer Valenciano on successfully completing the prestigious AHRA Leaders of Choice Program, a yearlong leadership development experience offered by AHRA: The Association for Medical Imaging Management.

Pictured just left of the AHRA banner and standing alongside fellow participants from across the country at the recent AHRA Annual Meeting in Orlando, Summer joined 10 other imaging leaders in celebrating the culmination of the program. The experience is designed to help senior imaging professionals strengthen their leadership, business, and healthcare management skills.

📸 Ready when our community needs us.

Wilcox Medical Center recently joined healthcare, military, and emergency response partners from across Hawai‘i in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2026 exercise, helping strengthen readiness for large-scale emergencies and disasters.

As part of the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief portion of the exercise, team members participated in realistic emergency preparedness drills focused on patient triage, transport, bed capacity management, and coordinated response operations. Simulated patient scenarios, including participation from our Wilcox summer interns, provided valuable opportunities to practice skills that are essential during real-world emergencies.

🌎 RIMPAC is the world's largest international maritime exercise, bringing together partners from 31 nations to strengthen preparedness and collaboration. Mahalo to everyone who participated in this important training effort and for helping ensure Wilcox remains ready to serve Kaua‘i when it matters most.

As the Health Careers Summer Internship Program enters its final weeks, interns at Wilcox Medical Center recently participated in a Career Development Seminar designed to help them prepare for the next step in their academic and professional journeys.

Through strengths-based activities, resume and interview workshops, and meaningful conversations with Wilcox Medical Center and Hawai‘i Pacific Health professionals from both clinical and nonclinical roles, interns gained valuable insights into the many career paths available in healthcare. The experience helped them build confidence, strengthen professional skills, and expand their networks as they prepare for their futures.
