These babes are grinding it out during finals week and I’m missing them so much this Mother’s Day, but I’m feeling incredibly grateful for the humans who made me a mom, for my own beautiful mother, and for all my smart, strong, funny friends who made raising our kids together a joy. And for the awesome moms I get to work with everyday through Adolessons, I see how much love and energy you pour into your children and I learn from and appreciate you all every day. Happy Mother’s Day. ❤️

I have been getting some hilarious study break FaceTimes from my college freshman, who is packing up her dorm room in the midst of finals. As much as my maternal instincts make me want to fly across the country to help her, the timing’s not right and I know she’s got this. Sharing here with anyone experiencing mom guilt as they watch the endless reels of parents moving their kids out of their dorms. If you’re able to do that, great! If not, just know that our big kids often prove just how capable they are when we give them the chance. 😉

Today is National Fentanyl Awareness Day. If you haven’t had this conversation with your loved ones yet, please do. (And if you have, talk about it again.) Fentanyl is a potent opioid drug (50-100 times more potent than he**in and morphine) and it has found its way into street drugs, including powders and fake pressed pills that look exactly like pharmaceutical medications. Literally one of these fake pills can kill you, and we’ve lost countless teens and young adults who thought they were taking a real Xanax or Percocet or Adderall. Teens can connect with dealers on social media, but sometimes the dealer is a friend or an acquaintance or another kid at school. These dealers don’t necessarily know what’s in the pills they are selling, and our kids need to know that too. There is much more to learn. Such a wonderful morning with Pali Elementary parents and my friend and colleague Dr. Courtney Karp. Our time together was an impactful reminder of how important it is to come together as a community, to continue to process this current phase of post-fire life together. Parenting can be hard enough in regular times— it’s especially challenging when your life has been turned upside down. And yes, it’s ok to still feel that way, 15 months post-fire. You are not alone.

If you want to pull together a group to talk about post-fire parenting, puberty, teen party culture, college health, free-birding or whatever else is on your mind, please reach out. There’s nothing I love more than creating community around these topics. ❤️
