Honored to have contributed to this The Wall Street Journal piece by Tara Weiss (link in bio). There are true physical, emotional, and legal risks of teen alcohol use. In my work with parents and adolescents, I’m forever trying to strike a balance between educating about these risks and teaching harm reduction tactics in an effort to promote health and safety. I meet older teens who have never had a sip of alcohol and others who started in middle school, with alcohol provided to them and their friends by parents. With growing independence, teens (and their adults!) have to navigate a complicated party culture landscape and they need all the guidance they can get. So talk with your kids about your values and expectations, make sure they know how to stay safe(er) and that you will come get them (no questions asked in the moment) if they ever mess up or find themselves in a situation where they feel unsafe. ❤️

So grateful to Kaiser Permanente Southern California for inviting me to speak at a Grand Rounds for Domestic Violence Awareness month. We covered so much for this physician audience and now I want to adapt this talk for a parent audience. What’s on your mind when it comes to Looksmaxxing and the Manosphere? What concerns you as you raise your tweens, teens and young adults? These ideologies impact more than boys and young men.

Chiming in on this truly disturbing case. We can start to teach consent long before it has anything to do with s*x and this news out of Cornell should inspire us to talk about it again, whether it’s for the 2nd time or the 100th time. AND we need to also explore the cultural forces that may be playing a role in people’s mindsets around SA.

What is cyclorphine?
Cychlorphine is a synthetic opioid that is reportedly ten times as potent as fentanyl and requires much higher doses of naloxone for reversal. It’s part of an emerging class of synthetic opioids. This is the illicit market doing what it does—shifting to find new cheap, potent, easier to traffic chemicals. I know this article is new, but Cychlorphine is not brand new— it has been in the US for a year or two already, and its presence is spreading.

So here’s your conversation starter with your teens/ young adults/ loved ones.
Ask them what they may already have heard first, and then you can share your concerns about the risks. This is not a safe time to be getting pills or powders from friends or dealers or off the internet because the drug landscape is unsafe. Fake pills- fake percocets or Xanax or adderals or powders like co***ne may contain cychlorphine (just like they may contain fentanyl) which can cause someone to lose their respiratory drive and die. Administer Narcan if there is any concern someone might be having an opioid overdose, and of course call 911 and wait with them until the ambulance arrives.

Please have this potentially life-saving conversation. More than once. 🩵

Knowledge is power. It also can build empathetic helpers, as my young friend so beautifully demonstrated. The best was seeing her pride (and her mom’s) as she shared her story. Puberty doesn’t have to be so awkward. ❤️

This is me. Smiling through my tears as I said goodbye to my girl. I dropped her off for her sophomore year of college a couple days ago and already miss her so much. My 6th college goodbye and it never gets easier, but I’m also so excited for all she’s going to experience this year. Go get ‘em, Bestie. I can’t wait for all the stories and I’m so glad that parents’ weekend is only a month away! ❤️❤️ Now where are all my Free Birds!?? We need to plan some fun!
