Sometimes, a breakthrough is hiding in plain sight.

For decades, valproic acid was used as a laboratory solvent before researchers discovered its antiseizure effects. Today, continued research is helping clinicians better understand its benefits and rare but serious adverse reactions.

Everest Family Foundation scholar Dr. Areeba Ahmed is contributing to this work as a co-author of a 2026 submitted case report on valproic acid–induced necrotizing pancreatitis.

Swipe to follow the discovery and see why safer care depends on what we learn next.

A breakthrough can begin with something easy to miss.

In 1928, Fleming noticed that mold inhibited nearby bacterial growth. But discovery was only the beginning, it took years of testing, refinement, and collaboration for penicillin to transform modern medicine.

That same spirit of curiosity continues today. EFF supports scholars like Dr. Mahesh as they advance important medical research and pursue questions that could shape tomorrow’s breakthroughs.

Because every life-changing discovery starts with someone willing to look closer.
