THE GUARDIAN: Gen Z Flocks to Chinese Medicine as trust in US health system plummets: ‘It’s so personalized to being human’
🔹
“Why are Americans drawn to Chinese wellness tips – and expressing interest in “becoming Chinese” or “being in a very Chinese time” of their lives? It’s tied to what some have dubbed “Chinamaxxing”, a recent trend begun by Americans, involving the sharing of memes and videos in praise of Chinese culture.
🔹
“Ironically, Chinamaxxing was a response to Trump’s economic targeting of the country in 2025. Between a bungled trade war, flip-flopping restrictions on Chinese tech and a fudged TikTok ban, the US began to look feeble in comparison with its geopolitical rival. With a sense of subversiveness, young Americans started professing fascination with Chinese culture. Influencers…traveled to China to produce content, while the US market embraced Chinese cultural goods, such as Labubus.
🔹
“[TCM] is very rich with heritage, lineage, tradition [and] extremely rich in symbology,...This medicine is so personalized to being human, and with the emergence of AI…people are craving meaning and a return to humanness.”
🔹
“When Americans don’t trust their own institutions … they become more willing to look for alternative reference points Shaoyu Yuan.
🔹
“Americans have become skeptical of the US healthcare system’s emphasis on physician “specialization”, which can frustrate people seeking treatment for multi-symptom conditions such as long Covid and autoimmune disorders. “Chinese medicine really works best for chronic conditions where it touches upon multiple different health systems,” she said. (Numerous studies have shown that TCM therapies can play an important role in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases – but they can’t be claimed as a cure for all conditions.)

HEALTHCMI.com: Acupuncture Relieves Shoulder Pain, Ups Range of Motion.
🔹
“Research from the Yuxi Hospital of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) reveals that acupuncture has a total effective rate exceeding 90% for the treatment of acute shoulder periarthritis, commonly known as frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis.
🔹
The condition, prevalent in women over 40, results from a combination of hormonal changes, medical conditions, and prolonged shoulder immobilization, leading to the thickening and tightening of the connective tissue capsule around the shoulder joint.
🔹
Benefits of acupuncture for frozen shoulder:
🔹
Reduced inflammation by stimulating the release of immunomodulatory and vascular factors; neuropeptides (small proteins produced by specialist nerve cells) that regulate inflammation, blood vessel control, & blood flow in the body.
🔹
Less pain /modifying the way the body responds to pain. Needles placed on specific acupuncture points on the body, stimulate the nerves located in the muscles and other tissues to release the hormone serotonin and natural pain-killing chemicals called endorphins. These chemical messengers promote relaxation and feelings of wellbeing, and also alter the way the body processes pain in the brain and spinal cord.
🔹
Decreased shoulder stiffness /improved range of motion and mobility by enhancing blood flow to the area. Acupuncture improves local microcirculation by increasing the diameter and blood flow velocity of the veins and arteries that supply the shoulder area. Poor circulation in the shoulder joint and lack of fluids in the shoulder bursa (the fluid-filled sacks between joints that reduce friction) contributes to pain and inflammation. Stronger circulation of blood in the shoulder area improves nutrient delivery and reduces pain sensation, enabling you to move your shoulder more freely without feeling pain.

KAISER PERMANENTE: Acupuncture 101:
🔹
“Sticking needles into your skin might not sound like a good way to feel better. But that’s exactly how acupuncture works. In fact, the traditional Chinese practice has been used for centuries to treat all sorts of health conditions — and it’s still very common.
🔹
What is acupuncture?
🔹
Acupuncture is a type of traditional Chinese medicine that’s been around for about 2,500 years. It’s used to help heal illness & improve well-being. This is done by placing needles into specific points on the skin to help activate an energy in the body, called qi (“chee”). According to traditional Chinese medicine, qi is the life force energy in the body — it helps regulate and move things in the body to keep us well.
🔹
Stress, environmental factors, lifestyle behaviors, & genetics are some of the things that can block qi in the body. Acupuncturists use needles to unblock or move qi to other areas in the body to help you heal.
🔹
What does acupuncture treat?
🔹
In China, acupuncture is used to treat everything. It’s not thought of as an alternative medicine. For most people there, it’s just a common part of their medical care…acupuncture is often used as a complementary treatment for all sorts of health conditions, everything from asthma to diabetes.
🔹
In the West, acupuncture is more commonly used as part of a care plan for conditions like chronic low back pain or joint pain. It’s also used to treat gastrointestinal issues.

Happy Lunar New Year!🐍
🔹
The Chinese zodiac (Sheng Xiao) is a repeating 12-year cycle of animal signs and their recognized attributes, based on the lunar calendar.
🔹
2025 is the Year of the Snake. The snake, the 6th animal in the Chinese zodiac, is traditionally very wise with intuition and charm. People born in the Year of the Snake are believed to be perceptive, intelligent and graceful.
🔹
In Asia, the Lunar New Year begins on the date of the second new Moon after the winter solstice and marks the transition from one animal to the next.
🔹
The celebration includes New Year decorations, spending time with loved ones and enjoying plenty of good food.
🔹
The Wood Snake year offers us a powerful chance for transformation, renewal and new beginnings. It invites us to release what no longer serves us and create space for opportunities that resonate with our true selves.
🔹
Embrace this year’s reflective energy, as it contrasts with the dynamic drive of the previous Dragon year, allowing for deeper introspection and growth.
