Tips for neurotypical parents of autistic/neurodivergent teens and young adults. Michele Berg, a licensed psychotherapist in Los Angeles, is a neurotypical mom of India,23,who is autistic and a cosplay wig stylist (IG indi_wigs). We are sharing our journey of missteps, wrong turns, misunderstandings, repairs and laughs to hopefully help others. Autism in girls and women often looks quite different than in boys and men. Indi was not diagnosed until she was 17. Having the diagnosis was extremely helpful for her and us. It started her on a journey of deep personal understanding. Michele started her own deep dive to understand herself and her parenting through psychedelic psychotherapy. We did everything we could to understand ourselves, our relationship with each other and how autism affects indi specifically. By doing this deep therapeutic work, we were able to start supporting Indi in a way that felt right for her. It’s an ongoing learning and growing process for us. We are both happy to answer any questions. Michele often works with parents of autistic adult children in her psychotherapy practice.
