Two women in a 1950 Agatha Christie mystery share a house and a life, and when one of them is murdered, the other's grief is written with a tenderness readers have spent decades deciding they recognize. Miss Hinchcliffe and Miss Murgatroyd, of A Murder Is Announced, are now widely read as a le***an couple - and Christie labeled them nothing at all.

She was born this week in 1890, and she went on to become the best-selling fiction writer in history, an estimated two billion books in print, who rarely said a public word about gay people. But the coded pattern recurs across her work - scholars point to the q***r-coded Christopher Wren in The Mousetrap and others - and academics now write books and essays about the q***r lives tucked inside the world's best-selling mysteries, all of it set down in a publishing culture that strongly favored discretion.

Long after her death, readers are still finding the people she wrote between the lines.

Kimberly Peirce spent five years fighting to turn the murder of Brandon Teena - a trans man killed in Nebraska in 1993 - into a film that took her years to get made. When Boys Don't Cry finally reached screens in 1999, it won Hilary Swank an Oscar for playing Brandon. "When Hilary won," Peirce said, "my feeling was that Brandon got an Oscar."

Peirce, who describes herself as q***r and as a trans butch, made the film as an act of love for a community that was her own. And she has spent the years since defending its hardest choice - casting a cisgender actor as Brandon - in arguments that have sometimes turned into protests aimed at her.

Peirce turns 59 this week, still tangled up in the film that mattered most to her, and still refusing to pretend it was ever simple.

Instead of simply saying “Stop rocking” or “Stop spinning,” let’s first understand the sensory need behind it. Every child is different, and what helps one child may not help another. 💙
