See ya, Summer!

Summer is waning. The meteorological fall began on September 1, though the official autumnal equinox is not until September 22. It is supposed to be near 90 degrees outside today, but we are indeed transitioning into fall. Daylight hours grow shorter. The heavy heat of July and August gives way to a quieter, cooler rhythm. A fresh chill is present in the very early dawn. Cicadas sing at night and leaves begin their slow turn, ever so subtly at first, barely noticeable.

Here is my oh, so precious grandson. He and I had a lot of fun with sidewalk chalk in August. Those days will be a lovely memory and next summer we will make more sidewalk chalk memories. But for now, we put away things of summer and inch into our next season.

It is a healthy reminder that we are all moving into new seasons, literally and figuratively. Things of warm, sunny days must be held in sweet fondness as we propel forward. Holding too tightly to golden moments has a tendency to tarnish our present and future. As long as we have breath (which I nearly ran out of in January), we can transition with grace and zeal. Carry on.

Take the Stairs, Baby!

In an August 13 announcement by U.S. News & World Report, β€œTaking the stairs is a practical and often overlooked way to build physical activity into daily life.” I can see you rolling your eyes and saying β€œDuh, not a newsflash.” But wait.

Researchers analyzed data from nine studies involving more than 480,000 people, ages 35 to 84. This was looked at over a median follow-up of 14 years. One study concluded that climbing around six flights of stairs a day may provide the greatest benefit in preventing premature death from a cardiac event.

This is not just something that is good for you, blah, blah, blah. This is an intense study looking at the prevention of PREMATURE DEATH FROM A CARDIAC EVENT. I needed to repeat that sentence in all caps.

For someone like me who once got stuck in an elevator and now avoids them as much as possible, this is a great β€œout." I can proudly tout that I am climbing the steps for my health, with a smug smirk. BTW, if I ever give you a smug smirk, please smack me.

You can also just be smart and whenever the choice is available, take the stairs. Every day at work, or for all appointments, or move into an old, very tall castle. All options work.

"Happy Birthday to Me"

Balloons, banners, roses, hat, cake…looks like I had a birthday! I sure did celebrate my birthday on August 21. We all remember looking forward to our birthdays in our younger years. I so recall being thrilled to turn 13 because I was officially out of childhood. And all of the big ones: 18, 21, 25, 30, 40. Oh, how the years go by. I remember crying when the cake was brought out at my 50th birthday family dinner. Wow, to be 50!

But here I am, turning 69. I’m not totally sure how this happened. I actually went into the paper file and checked my birth certificate to just be sure there was no error.

In January I underwent an emergency open heart surgery that saved my life. No hints, no prepping, no nudges, just boom! One moment I’m moving along merrily in life and then I’m not.

I am amazingly thankful to acknowledge a birthday. Would I rather have turned 49 or 59? Perhaps. But I celebrate with gratitude and I celebrate a number that my father, two brothers, and other dear family members and friends never saw. I’ll take it. I’ll take it, along with the crow’s feet and wrinkled hands. I’ve earned them.

I remember reading in a Lincoln biography that he often pondered his presidency while walking with a baby in his arms. The book noted that after his own children were grown, he once borrowed a baby from a neighbor so that he could pace with a warm baby bundle and process his thoughts. It helped him stay calm and focused. That may be a myth, but I certainly understand the idea.

Here I am with my 11-month-old grandson. He is a joy. I could breathe him in. Holding and cuddling a baby triggers positive hormonal shifts, including an increase in β€œfeel-good” chemicals like oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin, which help reduce stress and promote a serene, buoyant mood.

These happy chemicals also support essential physical functions like movement, digestion, blood flow, and heart rate. Amazingly, reduced inflammation and improved wound healing are benefits, as well.

There are things we can do to increase our mood-boosting hormones, including eating a healthy diet and exercise. I do those things. But for me, a baby in my arms works like a charm.
