Just your neighborhood midwife and herbalist here, once again asking if you would be interested in a chill get together where we make fire cider and elderberry syrup together before the cold and flu season? Anyone interested? Yay or nay? 🫚🍋🍯🌶️🧄🫙

One of the many perks of community midwifery care is that sometimes we have the option to do partial barters. I received some farm fresh eggs as a barter for a quick ultrasound to check fetal lie and presentation today! 🥚
I also saw my own midwife for well person care today and bartered quail manure for her to use in her garden.

Passing the NARM exam isn’t entirely about memorizing random facts. It’s also about learning how to think through clinical scenarios the way you’ll need to as a practicing midwife.

That’s exactly why I created an online, easy to navigate NARM Practice Exam.

Inside you’ll find:
• A Basic Practice Exam to build confidence and identify knowledge gaps.
• An Advanced Practice Exam designed to challenge your clinical reasoning with case-based questions written in the style of the real NARM exam.
• Realistic questions written in the style of the NARM exam, covering the topics student midwives struggle with most.
• An 80% passing score to help you prepare for the expectations of the actual exam.

Whether you’re months away from testing or your exam date is around the corner, practicing with realistic questions is one of the most effective ways to improve your confidence and identify exactly what you still need to review while also polishing your test taking skills.

If you’ve been asking yourself:
“Am I actually ready?”
“I keep studying but but what if it’s not enough?”
“Will my midwifery knowledge translate into a test format?”
“What kinds of questions will NARM ask?”

This was made for you.

YOU HAVE WORKED TOO HARD TO LET TEST ANXIETY KEEP YOU FROM BECOMING A MIDWIFE! Give yourself the opportunity to practice before the stakes are real.

Feel free to follow link in my bio to give it a go!

Save this post so you can come back to it during your study sessions, and share it with another student midwife who’s getting ready for board exam.

Most of us received very little education about how our fertility actually works.

We learned how to prevent pregnancy (mainly through a focus on abstinence and heterosexuality — which is horrendous), we learned basic anatomy, and then we were expected to figure out the rest on our own.
Fertility awareness changes that.

Understanding your cycle can help you identify your fertile window when trying to conceive, recognize patterns in your reproductive health, and make informed decisions if you’re looking for a non-hormonal approach to avoiding pregnancy.

This course was created to provide practical, evidence-based education in a format you can work through at your own pace. You’ll learn how to identify fertility signs, track your cycle accurately, understand ovulation, and interpret what your body is telling you each month.

Whether you’re trying to get pregnant, avoid pregnancy, transition off hormonal birth control, or simply understand your reproductive health better, fertility awareness is a skill that can serve you for years.

I’m also hoping midwives, doulas, lactation professionals, childbirth educators, and other reproductive health professionals will share this resource with clients who want a deeper understanding of their cycles but may not have access to individualized fertility awareness instruction.

I’ve gotten A few IUI inquiries this week, so I thought I would talk about the process again!
Most people don’t know you can do IUI at home. Here’s why more families are choosing a midwife.

When most people think about IUI (intrauterine insemination), they picture a fertility clinic.

What many people don’t realize is that IUI can often be performed at home or in a midwife’s office, offering a more personal and comfortable experience.

At Pax & Lux Midwifery, I provide IUI services for LGBTQIA+ families, single parents by choice, and couples who are looking for supportive, individualized fertility care in Madison, Wisconsin and surrounding areas (including Milwaukee!).

Some of the reasons people choose a midwife for IUI include:

• A calm, comfortable environment
• More time for education and questions
• Inclusive, affirming care
• Flexible scheduling and personalized support

Fertility care doesn’t have to feel rushed or impersonal. My goal is to help you understand your options, feel supported in your decision-making, and receive care that honors your unique path to parenthood.

If you’re curious about at-home IUI, office IUI, fertility support, or cycle tracking, I’d be happy to talk through your options.

Pop the 23rd annual Friends of Home Birth Picnic in your calendar! June 6th (June 7th rain date) 12-3pm at Orton Park with a group photo at 1pm!

Potluck!
Will there probably be a lot of kale and quinoa and sourdough and strawberries? Absolutely.

Parent & Baby Item Swap!
Will there be lots of baskets and wool and linen and baby gnome hats?
Probably.

Hug your midwife!
Will we all love it? You know it.

Big thanks to for making the flyer like a cutie who is going on a double date with me tomorrow.

Also, I always use the Home Birth Picnic as my unofficial birthday party. And I just turned 40. And I just found a new wrinkle. Are you coming?!

People frequently ask “how do you do this all the time?” Being on call, the long hours, sleepless nights, gently cradling two lives at the same time, etc…. And consistently, my answer is always the same.
I could only be able to practice midwifery with solid community.
- Excellent hospital relationships and hospital based providers who are trauma informed and collaborative.
- My husband, my daughters, my sister, my nieces, who lift my spirits and bring me coffee cake from
- My sibling midwives who walk shoulder to shoulder with me both at births and outside of the birth space.
- Doulas, IBCLC’s, and therapists who hold families tenderly to add additional care in creating a dynamic team.
- Singing in the car to my favorite bands
- Alone time in the garden, connecting periodically with my neighbors and the birds.

Thanks, ya little petunias.
