As District Home Assisted Living Nurse Manager, Michelle Short-Pack, LPN, sees emotional care as an essential part of the work.

Sometimes that means calming anxiety, listening through grief, helping someone feel less lonely, or simply making sure a resident feels safe, comfortable, valued, and respected.

Her advice to anyone considering nursing is simple and powerful: come with an open heart, a strong desire to help others, and a commitment to communication, teamwork, and empathy.

Michelle’s work is a reminder that great care is not only clinical; it is deeply human.

For Angela, nursing is about building relationships, preserving dignity, advocating for residents, and supporting people through vulnerable moments with patience, empathy, and attention to detail.

Her advice to future nurses is just as meaningful: “Come with an open mind, keep learning, communicate well, and care for your own well-being. Being a nurse is challenging, but it gives you the chance to truly make a difference."

You do not have to be a clinician to support the mental health of an older adult. Families, care workers, administrators, friends, volunteers, and community members all play a role by noticing changes, listening with patience, encouraging connection, and communicating concerns when needed.

Share this with someone who cares for, works with, or lives with an older adult.

Our employees’ wellness is directly connected to resident care.

When healthcare workers feel supported, respected, and heard, they are better able to provide safe, compassionate, and high-quality care to residents.

At Birmingham Green, we are proud of our efforts that support staff wellness, improve communication among team members, and help our care teams provide more personalized care to residents.

Because when we care for the people who provide care, residents benefit.

As Director of Nursing at our NVHCC nursing home, Hawa sees assisted living and long-term care as more than a place where care is delivered. It is home for the residents who live here.

This National Nurses Month, we’re proud to recognize Hawa and the lasting impact she makes on residents, families, and team members every day.

Depression in older adults can be easy to miss. It may not always look like sadness. Sometimes it appears as withdrawal, changes in sleep or appetite, low energy, irritability, loss of interest in activities, or a general sense that someone “just isn’t themselves.”

As part of Birmingham Green’s comprehensive care, we support mental health with:

✅ routine screenings
✅ ongoing mood and behavior monitoring
✅ individualized care plans
✅ structured daily routines
✅ timely referrals to psychiatry or other appropriate services when needed.

Families are also vital partners. Regular visits, phone calls, emotional reassurance, and open communication with the care team can make a meaningful difference.
