Happy Juneteenth! 🖤❤️💚 Today is about celebrating freedom, honoring history, and looking forward to the work that still needs to be done, especially in medicine.
True liberation means health equity. While medicine has a complicated history with race, grassroots advocates and medical leaders are pushing the needle forward:
2020: The launch of Mind the Gap, a medical handbook co-created by Malone Mukwende to teach clinicians how diseases present on Black and Brown skin, addressing a massive gap in standard medical education. (link in the comments)
2021: The historic decision to remove the flawed "race modifier" from kidney function lab assessments (eGFR), ensuring Black patients get more accurate, timely access to specialist care and transplants.
These changes prove that medicine can evolve when we challenge outdated biases. Let’s keep pushing, keep learning, and keep demanding a healthcare system that serves all of us equally. 🩺✨
