Boundaries may mean that you stop behaviors in service of others in the same way that a customer service rep’s job description reads. When we are so externally focused on the happiness and contentedness of everyone around us, often we can fail to see what we need and forego those needs. That’s exactly when overwhelm, burnout, and exhaustion begin to seep in. Take a look at your boundaries and ask yourself if they are working for or against you.

Creating boundaries can be really difficult…but maintaining them can be where the really hard work begins. It takes practice, a lot of reflection and understanding yourself to keep them in place. If you are just starting out with boundaries and creating ones that help to keep you safe, healthy, content, and working toward your goals…be kind to yourself as you learn how to keep them up.

People in your life may have difficulty with the boundaries you set, based on what they assume that means about them or about the relationship with you. If you are neurodivergent and are new to boundaries, this may be especially difficult, as you are more likely to have masked and camouflaged in the relationship. However, it is inherently more important for you to have boundaries…they help delay or avoid overwhelm, minimize sensory and relational impact, and may allow you the extra time needed to process, adjust, and interact with others. Setting boundaries that are in alignment to your value system and help you function in the external environment are non-negotiable and deeply rooted to you being able to thrive.

Excuses are different than giving yourself space, but they can often come disguised as such and are meant to keep you comfortable. But this kind of comfort isn’t the kind that keeps you content, it’s the kind that keeps you stuck. Exploring the discomfort and moving into that is where you will find growth.

I’ll start Monday…start now, trip over today. Monday doesn’t believe in you or wait for you…you’ve gotta believe in yourself and start now. It will be messy and you’ll trip a few times (or in the case of this plank challenge roll over and maybe fall flat). But you won’t know how capable you are of picking yourself up and have the ability of looking back where you started if you don’t make the first move. Make the first move and the moving will get easier over time.

The only person you’re ever truly in competition with is yourself. If you keep avoiding you and never get in the ring you forfeit without getting started. This can be especially complex if you are neurodivergent both in how your brain functions as well as those societal roadblocks that get in the way. Readjusting the focus to your goals and values versus looking at the successes, milestones, and skills of others in a comparative way can help you realign your efforts towards progress that is aligned with you.

Strength can often come from the struggle and continuing to hold emotion, lift the heavy, and sit with the burden while doing the things that continue to move you forward. Life will continue to put obstacles in your path; it’s what you choose to do with them and how you continue to show up with consistency that matter. Keep moving forward, check the emotional backpack a few times to see what you are carrying around, edit as you see fit, and continue to put one foot in front of the other.

It’s ok to carry the load for other important people when it matters and makes sense to your value system. AND its also ok to let others help to carry you through when you need it. Balance occurs when we let both happen and they align with your value system. If you are a caregiver, this means that the balance can be off...we can help with that. We understand what that means, how it affects you, and can be part to the support system that evens out the load you carry.
Wishing you balance and here to support you when you are ready.
