When we rely on our ability to keep emotions unfelt, eventually that practice will catch up with us. Unprocessed emotions can cause irrationality in our thinking, lots of rumination, and patterns of behavior we may not want to see. Processed emotions, on the other hand, can make you unstoppable creating resiliency, increasing awareness, and offering a sense of grace for your own experience. Explore your emotion…feel it, name it, own it…then you can approach managing how it arises.

Emotion drives action and we often give that action a value…good, bad…right, wrong…positive, negative. And at times, for a lot of those reasons, we push down emotion, ignore it, avoid it, distract from it as if our life depends on it. In reality, its just our comfort level that depends on it…and what if those emotions aren’t actually the enemy and running from them isn’t helpful? When we avoid emotion, especially for prolonged periods of time, they become a larger undercurrent and the repression of those emotions can become the problem. This can make our somatic response different, our nervous systems on edge, and affect our behavior in ways we never anticipate. Allowing yourself to experience emotion, in safe, and sometimes titrated ways, can decrease the burden of carrying this with you every day.

Alexithymia can be translated to mean no words for emotions and is often linked to neurodivergent and trauma diagnoses and symptoms. The individual with alexithymia can have an abundance of challenges, not only in figuring out what they are actually feeling in a typical fashion comparative to how we expect to feel during specific circumstances, but also in communicating this to others. This can often lead to exasperation for both the individual and others who support them, quite often affecting the parent-child relationship as well as partner relationships. Understanding how you interpret, feel, and process emotions and how those you love do the same can help reduce the personalization of what is occurring and create better communication and understanding.

We often look at the big picture, the finish line, and the end goal…but in reality, goals are achieved in consistency that shows up daily, in small wins and tasks, in completely the little things over and over and over again. We often refer to these as habits. Habits can be taking time for yourself, learning to slow down to breath, getting in a walk, prioritizing a nutrient dense meal, or clocking in workouts. It can be easy to see this when we think about saving up financial resources for something...you may not be able to purchase the thing right away, but over time, it may be possible…so you keep putting away a little bit at a time until you can make the purchase. The same thing can apply to your mental and physical health, relationships, skills, and strengths too. When you reach for consistency, you also reach for your goals.

The grass may be greener, but when you focus on the end product and don’t see the effort that went into it, it can be really easy to become discouraged, disillusioned, and never start. That also means that you may also be sitting with a different level of skills, privilege, and supports than others too…it’s important to take this into account and use your resources towards consistency in the way that fits you best. Overall, effort through consistency applied appropriately is what will allow you to reach your goals and consistent focus on that is part of that equation.

Motivation and the reliance on motivation will only take you so far…because life happens in the middle of our goals. If you are neurodivergent, this may be even more important to remember because motivation may be completely untapped, invisible, or altogether not really a thing. Approaching consistency through supports, discipline in using those supports, and benchmarks of accountability broken down into small tasks is much more digestible and can lead to achievable long term success.

Roots Before Fruits Friday! At Neuro-Roots we believe in the compounding power of rooted growth and working with foundational aspects to produce good things, like fruits. This week was all about defining what’s happening, being clear on the problem, and taking a minute to figure out where you are going…and we’re putting it all together.

Define a problem, identify a challenge, become aware of an obstacle…and you are already on your way to a solution. It’s really difficult to change something without awareness and when change happens, it can be really important to uncover what internal and external factors keep you stuck, help you move forward, or are impossible to shift. Once awareness of this hits, if change is what you want to see, then you also need to keep moving forward and pair action with that identification. Awareness can get you halfway there and then it’s up to action to carry you the rest of the way. Keep going.

Jump, stop, slow down long enough to take a good look at where you are and where you want to go. You simply cannot blaze a trail forward if you don’t know where to start, you won’t make it very far if you forget to breath along the way, and you definitely will struggle to land where you intended if you neglect to take the time to create the vision and path forward. Here’s your reminder to take a minute to figure out where you are in the journey, reassess what doesn’t make sense, and lean into the moment.
