If you’ve heard the term “unipolar depression” and wondered how it’s different from just “depression” – the answer is simple: it’s the same thing, described more precisely. The “unipolar” label exists mainly to distinguish it from bipolar disorder, which involves both depressive and manic/hypomanic episodes.
Unipolar Depression Defined
Unipolar depression is major depressive disorder – persistent low mood, loss of interest, and related symptoms, with no manic or hypomanic episodes at any point. The “poles” in bipolar disorder refer to high and low mood states; unipolar depression only involves the low end.
Symptoms and Diagnostic Criteria
Diagnosis requires at least five symptoms – including depressed mood or loss of interest – present for two weeks or more. Common symptoms include fatigue, sleep disruption, appetite changes, difficulty concentrating, feelings of worthlessness, and in more severe cases, thoughts of death or su***de.
