I stress again and again to people the importance of ANNUAL eye exams. It may sound crass but I don’t care if you don’t want to see. If you need glasses and you choose not to wear any -that’s on you. I want to see clearly but if you don’t want to then so be it. But what everyone needs to understand is that eye doctors can determine SO MUCH about your health - your overall health not just your eye health. We not only see glaucoma and cataracts and macular degeneration and retinal detachments and corneal ulcers and pink eye…we see high blood pressure and diabetes and MS and arthritis and melanoma and diabetes and high cholesterol. THAT’S why you need eye exams. Last month I started having trouble with MY OWN vision. Wishing I could look at my own eye to figure out what was going on, I finally contacted my colleague Deborah Valido. Turns out I had two partial retinal detachments and immediately had to have emergency surgery at the Eye Institute. I am still healing and waiting for clear vision to return. Please don’t mess around. EVERY PERSON, EVERY YEAR.

If you are in a GLP-1 for diabetes or weight loss (Byetta, Victoza, Saxenda, Novo Nordisk, Trulicity, Adlyxin, Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, Mounjaro, or Zepbound) you should see an eyecare professional like Dr. Snyder at least every 6 months and possibly every 3 months. Although generally helpful, these medications can cause optic neuritis, worsening of diabetic retinopathy, and blurred vision. You should also have a baseline eye exam before you start any of these. Call immediately if you experience blurred vision.

Two great success stories today:

A 91 incredibly youthful and active patient credits me with saving her vision. She underwent injections and a research study at my referral and is doing great and still driving.

And a mother of a 4 year old told me that we are MUCH better equipped to see children than…get this…Children’s Hospital! And she said the felt rushed in and out there.
