How good is your thoracic mobility? And when was the last time you actually worked on it?
Thoracic spine mobility is an often overlooked piece of both movement and performance, especially for strength athletes.
Your mid-back needs to be able to rotate and extend efficiently during everything from overhead pressing and pulling to squatting, reaching, and everyday movement. When that mobility is limited, your body still has to find the motion somewhere, which can lead to compensation through the shoulders, neck, or low back.
For this strength athlete, we’re combining cupping, dry needling, manual therapy, and cupping massage with active thoracic rotation and extension work. The hands-on treatment helps address restrictions, but that’s only part of the process.
The bigger goal is to follow that up with active mobility and strengthening so she can actually control and use the motion we gain when she’s training.
Mobility isn’t just about being flexible. It’s about having access to the positions your sport or training demands and being strong enough to control them.
