🌱 Plant roots can start communicating with beneficial fungi even before they make physical contact.

A new study shows that rice roots change the way they grow in response to signals from the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Rhizophagus irregularis. The researchers found that live fungal spores stimulated the growth and branching of large lateral roots through the coordinated action of auxin, strigolactones, and nitric oxide.

🔬 Using microscopy techniques ranging from stereomicroscopy to confocal super-resolution imaging, the team visualized nitric oxide deep within developing roots, helping reveal the early signaling events that support beneficial plant-fungal interactions.

The work was led by Giulia Raffaele and colleagues at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, in close collaboration with the Nikon Imaging Center , providing new insights into how plants optimize root architecture for symbiosis and nutrient acquisition.
