Loneliness finds us at the most funky times.
After a death, a job loss, a breakup, a move. Or even "just because".
Feeling lonesome sucks. However, it's a feeling 1 in 3 adults feel.
And worse, it can hinder your immune system, and can lead to depression.
Loneliness makes stressful situations feel magnified, and we never feel rested, even after a good night's sleep.
Great. What can we do about it?
Talk to someone. Doesn't have to be a professional, but they are particularly good at helping. Right set expectations of others. If your friend is busy, get on their calendar another day.
Find healthy activities that help the feelings of being alone subside. Whether that is joining a group, visiting family, getting a pet. It will be different for everyone. It's ok if we have to try a few things before it gets better.
Getting rid of loneliness is also about letting go of cynicism and mistrust of others. So next time you meet someone new, try to lose that protective shield and really allow them in, even though you don’t know what the outcome will be.
