Sleep Disruption

🌙 CLINICAL CLUE #1: Sleep Disruption Isn’t Always “Just Insomnia.”

A woman in long-term recovery tells you she’s waking every night between 2:00 and 4:00 AM.

She’s exhausted.

Her anxiety has increased.

Her patience is gone.

She’s craving relief in ways she hasn’t for years.

Our first instinct might be to explore relapse risk, depression, anxiety, trauma, or medication changes—and those are all important considerations.

But what if there’s another piece of the clinical picture?

For many women, the menopause transition can significantly disrupt sleep long before they recognize other hormonal changes. Chronic sleep disruption doesn’t just cause fatigue—it can affect emotional regulation, stress tolerance, decision-making, and recovery.

Sometimes the most important intervention begins with a better assessment question.

💬 Consider asking:
“How has your sleep changed over the past 6–12 months?”

Because better questions often lead to better care.

🚨 What if the symptoms you’re treating aren’t telling the whole story?

When women enter treatment during perimenopause or menopause, sleep disruption, brain fog, anxiety, emotional reactivity, and increased cravings can complicate recovery—and are often mistaken for relapse, depression, or lack of motivation.

Join me for a practical, evidence-informed training designed specifically for addiction professionals.

We’ll explore how hormonal changes can influence recovery and how asking better questions can lead to better clinical outcomes.

🚨 What if we’ve been asking the wrong questions?

A woman with eight years of recovery sits in your office and quietly says:

“I don’t recognize myself anymore.”

She’s exhausted.

She’s waking at 2:30 every morning.

She’s forgetting words.

She’s becoming increasingly anxious.

For the first time in years…

She’s thinking about drinking.

Is this relapse?

Depression?

Burnout?

Trauma?

Or is there another piece of the clinical picture we may be overlooking?

As addiction professionals, we spend our careers helping clients understand the connection between the brain, behavior, trauma, relationships, and recovery. Yet many of us received little or no formal education on how the menopause transition can influence many of these same systems.

This training isn’t about becoming a menopause expert.

It’s about becoming a more curious clinician.

In Menopause-Informed Addiction Care™: Improving Outcomes for Women in Recovery by Asking Better Questions, we’ll explore:

🧠 How the menopause transition can affect sleep, cognition, emotional regulation, and reward pathways

🩺 Clinical clues that may distinguish hormonal transition from relapse, depression, anxiety, or medication effects

💬 Better assessment questions that lead to more comprehensive clinical formulations

🌿 Practical, evidence-informed strategies for treatment planning, relapse prevention, and interdisciplinary collaboration

Through compelling case studies, current neuroscience, and practical clinical frameworks, you’ll leave with tools you can apply immediately to improve care for women entering treatment and those navigating long-term recovery.

Because sometimes the most important change isn’t in our clients.

It’s in the questions we ask.

Most employers don’t realize how much time is lost after a DOT violation—not because of the violation itself, but because of delays in the SAP process.

As a DOT-qualified SAP, I often see:
• Delayed evaluations
• Unclear next steps
• Miscommunication between providers and employers

The reality is—when the process is handled correctly, employees can move through it efficiently and return to duty safely and compliantly.

If you’re an employer or HR professional, having a reliable SAP resource before you need one makes all the difference.

I’m always happy to be a resource if questions come up.
