Have unused or expired medications sitting in a medicine cabinet?

VA Memphis Healthcare System is making it easy to safely get rid of them during DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

The event is open to Veterans, VA employees and members of the community who want a safe and convenient way to dispose of medications they no longer need. VA staff will be available to assist in safe disposal of medications.

Why take back unused medications?

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration established National Prescription Drug Take Back Day to provide communities with a safe way to remove unwanted medications from their homes. Keeping medications that are expired or no longer needed can increase the risk of accidental poisoning, misuse or medications getting into the wrong hands. Proper collection and disposal also helps keep medications from entering landfills and water systems.

Since the national program began in 2010, Take Back events and permanent collection sites across the country have collected millions of pounds of unwanted medications for secure disposal.

What can I bring?

Accepted items include prescription tablets, capsules, patches and liquid medications in sealed original containers. V**e pens and e-cigarettes may be accepted when batteries have been removed.
Syringes, sharps, illicit drugs and medications contained inside used sharps cannot be accepted.

There is no appointment necessary. Simply bring your unwanted medications to the Red Tower Lobby during the event. Collection is designed to provide a simple, secure way to clear unneeded medications from your home and ensure they are disposed of responsibly.

Access to nutritious food is an important part of Veterans’ health and well-being.

Through a national pilot program, 18 VA facilities are helping address food insecurity by connecting Veterans with nutritious food and supportive services.

At VA Memphis, the food hub helped provide approximately 1,850 meals to Veterans and their families within its first 30 days of operation. Beyond access to food, Veterans can receive same-day nutrition, social work and community support services.

More than a meal, it’s another way VA is supporting Veterans’ overall health.

Turning 65? Your health care coverage may be changing—but your VA health care benefits don’t go away.

As Veterans approach age 65, they may have questions about how VA health care, Medicare and TRICARE For Life (TFL) work together. The right combination depends on your individual circumstances.

A few things to keep in mind:
-Medicare enrollment timing matters, and delaying enrollment may result in penalties in some circumstances.

-VA health care is its own health care system. Medicare generally does not pay for care you receive at VA facilities.

-For eligible military retirees, TRICARE For Life generally requires Medicare Part A and Part B.

-VA health care and TRICARE For Life can work together—enrolling in one does not cancel the other.

-Your health care needs and coverage may change over time, so it’s important to review your options before turning 65.

Still have questions? An accredited Veteran Service Organization (VSO) representative, attorney, or claims agent can help you navigate VA, Medicare, and TFL together, at no cost. Find one at https://www.va.gov/get-help-from-accredited-representative/
