✨ Exciting Changes Are Blooming! ✨

Over the past few years, No Limits Occupational Therapy has grown beyond my wildest dreams. It’s been an honor to serve my clients and their families, supporting them in achieving meaningful growth and improvement in everyday life.

Now, I’m thrilled to announce that we are growing and evolving! Starting January 1, 2025, No Limits Occupational Therapy will become Winding Willows.

Why the name change? Just like the willow tree bends gracefully in the wind, our new name reflects flexibility, resilience, and growth. It also represents our expanding vision: one that focuses on collaboration, connection, and compassionate care.

Executive functioning skills are a set of cognitive processes that children and adults use in every aspect of their daily lives. We use these skills to plan ahead, have self-control, recall information and steps, manage our time, and be flexible during changes of routine.

Some children need more guided help and instruction to learn and improve these skills. Some children learn to ride a bike seemingly overnight and other children need a lot of support and practice. The same is true with learning executive functioning skills!

The pyramid of learning (Taylor, Trott 1991) is one of my favorite models to use as an occupational therapist. I often educate parents on the importance of building foundational skills for developing higher level skills such as play, independent living skills, and academic skills.

In fact, these higher level functions are highly dependent upon our ability to process incoming sensory, emotional, and motor information and respond appropriately to this input.

Picture a child that has poor postural control and auditory processing skills. It’s hard to focus on the paper in front of him or understand the teacher’s instructions during class if just maintaining an upright posture or filtering auditory information in a busy environment is an issue. This is where we start in therapy.

Oftentimes, my clients and their families come in with functional concerns that are higher up on the pyramid. They may feel frustrated that their child is not yet able to complete school assignments, daily routines, or play well with siblings with peers.

This pyramid offers parents a different perspective and clues them in to the many factors that impact a child’s overall performance. In these cases, “zooming out” and looking at the entire picture of the child is incredibly important in order to address the true cause of a child’s challenges.

A hug can be amazingly healing for all ages, both for littles and adults!

I love this analogy! We need to be the brake for our littles when their emotions are big. Emotions are NEVER wrong! We can teach and correct behaviors that happen during big emotions once everyone is regulated and calm. Punishing a child because of their emotional response does not help them learn how to "brake" on their own.

SOME KIDS NEED A HUG WHILE OTHER KIDS JUST NEED A LITTLE TIME AND SPACE

Tantrums are a normal part of child development. They're how young children show that they're upset or frustrated. Tantrums may happen when kids are tired, hungry, or uncomfortable.

We are all sensory beings! During the holidays (when there are changes to in our normal routine and many different sensory experiences), our preferences become more noticeable. Be patient and allow time to regulate to accommodate for the changes in sensory input.
