If you’ll be attending this year’s conference, make sure you join Birth In Color’s Founder & Executive Director, Kenda Sutton-EL, as she takes the stage joining Elon birthdetroit, National Partnership September 12!

Kenda will bring Birth In Color’s perspective, lived experience, and commitment to advancing Black maternal health, reproductive justice, community-based doula care, and systems change to the conversation.

Gloria Steinem died Wednesday at home in New York. 92 years old.

What she did:

Went undercover as a Pl***oy Bunny in 1963 and published what she saw.

Co-founded Ms. magazine in 1972, the first mass-market magazine that treated women as people instead of housekeepers.

Co-founded the Women’s Action Alliance.

Told the world she’d had an illegal abortion at 22, and kept telling it for fifty years so the rest of us wouldn’t have to whisper.

Backed same-sex marriage when that cost her something.

Got the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.

But here’s the part we hold onto: she never took the stage alone.

She toured with Dorothy Pitman Hughes, the Black childcare organizer who built Ms. with her, and with Flo Kennedy, the Black civil rights lawyer who never softened a word for anybody.

That was a choice, to stand with all and fight for ALL.

To a hero and an audacious rebel, may you rest in power. 🤎

Sickle cell disease hits Black communities harder than any other. 

In Virginia, one in twelve African Americans in Hampton Roads carries the trait.

Half the Commonwealth’s sickle cell community lives in that one region.

On June 11th, Governor Spanberger signed the Queen Candis Act into law. The first package of its kind in the country.
