Freedom means nothing without equity.

Black birthing people in Virginia are still fighting for their lives. Structural racism in our healthcare system means Black mothers are dying at 3x the rate of white mothers — and that is not acceptable.

💬 Juneteenth is more than a day off and block parties.

On June 19, 1865 — two and a half years after Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation — Union soldiers finally arrived in Texas to announce what enslaved people were never meant to know: they were free.

Freedom withheld on purpose.

Today, we see it in Black birthing people being denied quality care. In reproductive rights being stripped away. In families across Virginia, navigating a system that was never built for them.

Juneteenth reminds us: freedom IS a verb.

Today we rest and reflect on the resistance, resilience, and work that never stopped.

IT’S OFFICIAL: The Right to Contraception Act is becoming LAW!

Today, we stood alongside Delegate Marcia Price as HB6 — the Right to Contraception Act — was signed into law. Starting July 1st, every Virginian’s right to obtain contraceptives and make decisions about their own body is protected.

To Delegate Marcia Price: we need a moment to give you your flowers. 

You carried this through all of the hurdles of GA — round after round, you didn’t blink. 

You held it down for every Virginian and ensured we can make our own reproductive choices WITHOUT political interference. 

We are SO proud to call you our delegate — thank you.💗

To the delegates and senators across the General Assembly who listened to Virginians and voted this bill through — thank YOU, too. 

This didn’t happen because of one person; it happened because enough people in that building chose to represent the people who sent them there.👏🏽

Finally, a thank you to Governor Spanberger for standing with Virginians and signing this into law, and to our partners for showing up in the fight every step of the way.

At the end of the day, community-based, community-led action is truly how we made this happen.

Systemic barriers to reproductive healthcare don’t disappear with one bill, but this is a real, concrete protection that Virginians didn’t have yesterday.

🚨 Henrico Doctors’ Hospital found out a nurse was hurting babies in the NICU. It took them weeks to tell anyone.

Seven infants at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital came out of the NICU with broken bones between August and September 2023. A radiologist told leadership straight up: this looks like abuse. Leadership picked a different story instead, one that kept the hospital out of the headlines, and Child Protective Services didn’t find out about four of those babies until weeks later.

By the time investigators got the full picture, the trail had already gone cold.

A special grand jury later called the hospital’s response indefensible.
