Quick, (don’t cheat!) before you read the caption, drop your guess in the comments! How many weeks would you guess this baby was?

This creamy white coating is called vernix. It protects baby’s skin throughout pregnancy and continues supporting the transition to life outside the womb after birth. It’s antimicrobial, helps regulate temperature, and acts as a natural moisturizer for newborn skin.

Interestingly, vernix can also give us clues about gestational age. In general, babies born earlier tend to have more vernix, while babies born later tend to have less, as it’s gradually absorbed into the skin and shed into the amniotic fluid as pregnancy progresses.

Of course, vernix is just one piece of the puzzle. But after attending enough births, you start to notice that babies often corroborate what their mothers have been saying all along.

This baby?
“42+2” by ultrasound 👀

One of many reminders that while ultrasound can be a valuable tool, it’s still just one piece of the puzzle. As a midwife who builds such deep trust with my families, I tend to put a lot more stock in cycle tracking, conception dates, and mothers who know their bodies well.

Driving home after welcoming two babies this morning.

Two first-time moms. Two completely different birth stories.

Both of them eventually reaching that place where there are no guarantees, no certainty, and no way around what comes next. Just the willingness to innately trust their bodies, surrender to the unknowing and dig deep within themselves.

And they did 🥹

Somehow, for the third time this year, those babies share a birthday.

So tired.
So absolutely blissed out. ✨
+ As their midwife, so incredibly proud.

I’m the kind of midwife who loves a heads up text when things may be unfolding. Not because I need to rush over, but because it gives me pause and time to prepare.

A cup of coffee while it’s still hot. Another check of my birth bags that were meticulously repacked after the last baby, but still need checking one more time. The chance to fully gather myself before stepping into whatever the day to come holds. If I’m lucky, a little extra time with my own kids before I go, knowing none of us really know if I’ll be gone for 2 hours or 2 days.

Somewhere over the years, braiding my hair before a birth became part of that pause. A marker of the transition between my everyday life and stepping into someone else’s extraordinary moment. A small ritual that allows me to check my own energy before stepping into someone else’s birth space. A chance to leave behind whatever isn’t mine to bring and arrive fully present for what is.

Across town, a family of mine is doing their own version of the same thing. Labor is quietly unfolding. A walk. A shower. A loaf of bread in the oven. Distract. Distract. Distract.

Different experiences, but the same pause.

This stretch of time before birth that feels suspended. They haven’t gone into the depths yet. Life is still happening around them. Everything resides in this liminal space between ordinary life and the most powerful transition of their lives.

There’s an inclination to rush this part, but there’s so much value in this space. In the ordinary things that keep us grounded while labor quietly unfolds. In the last few hours before this birth becomes the center of everyone’s world.

Now booking for August 2026 due dates and beyond.

One of the greatest privileges of this work is being invited into such a transformative season of a family’s life. It’s also one of the reasons I’ve become increasingly intentional about the number of families I serve each month.

I don’t want to be the busiest midwife. I want to have the capacity to show up fully for the families who choose me. I want to be present.

Present for the extra prenatal visit. Present for the long postpartum conversation. Present for the births that don’t happen on a schedule. Present for the families who have trusted me with their care.

And if I’m being honest, present for my own family too. My own children are growing up unbelievably quickly, and that time is something I can’t get back.

The availability reflected above represents the number of families I feel confident serving well each month. That said, if you’re considering care with Celestial Midwifery, please don’t let a “full” or limited month stop you from reaching out. I’m always happy to have a conversation and determine whether we’re the right fit.

Whether you’re planning a homebirth or looking for prenatal and postpartum care alongside a planned hospital birth, I’d love to connect.

I spent part of today talking about lab work, another unpacking a birth story from nearly a decade ago. Another part holding a baby so mom could take a shower in peace, and another answering a text that started with, “This might be a dumb question, but…” (it wasn’t 🫶🏻)

Which feels like a pretty accurate summary of midwifery.

People often imagine birth is the center of this work. And it is. But so much of what I do happens in the ordinary moments before and after.

On couches. Around kitchen tables. In late-night phone calls. In the questions people have been carrying around for weeks but weren’t sure who to ask.

The longer I do this, the more aware I am that good care isn’t built in the big moments alone. It’s built in the thousands of small ones. The conversations. The trust. The relationship that develops over months of walking through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum together.

Those moments are the reason I became a midwife in the first place.

If you’re looking for a midwife, I’d love to hear your story. 🥹

Hi, I’m Chelsey.

There are a lot of incredible midwives in our community. Most of us have similar training, licenses, and a shared belief that families deserve personalized care. Where we tend to differ is in how we practice and what we feel comfortable supporting. If you’re trying to decide which midwife is right for your family, I’d love to tell you a little about myself.

Over the years I’ve had the privilege of caring for first-time parents, families welcoming their fifth baby, VBACs, breech babies, post-dates pregnancies, advanced maternal age pregnancies, families who want to do all of the prenatal testing + those who want to do none at all, and many families who simply wanted a provider willing to slow down, have honest conversations, and support physiological birth.

I enjoy complexity. Not because I enjoy risk, but because I enjoy nuance. I genuinely enjoy helping families understand the risks, benefits, and alternatives available to them and then giving them the space to choose what feels right for their family. I won’t bait and switch you at the last moment, and I’ll stay in your corner until the end.

I believe informed consent should be more than a signature on a form, because my role isn’t to make decisions for you, and because you are a fully capable human being. My role is to provide information, share my clinical experience, and help you navigate your options with confidence.

The truth is, most families don’t choose their midwife based on credentials alone. They choose the person they want in the room when things get hard. The person they want answering the phone when they’re scared. The person they trust to remain calm when they don’t feel calm, to ground them when they don’t feel grounded.

The best compliment I receive isn’t that I’m knowledgeable (though I work hard to be).

It’s when families tell me they felt safe.

Safe to ask questions.
Safe to change their minds.
Safe to be fully themselves.

Birth is vulnerable. You deserve care that feels like a relationship, not a transaction.

If you’re exploring your options and wondering whether we’d be a good fit, I’d love to connect. Consultation calls can be scheduled through the link in my bio. 🫶🏻🪴

Sometimes the most important part of care is simply being heard, having space to ask every question, process every thought, and never feel rushed.

Phone consultations are one of my favorite ways to connect and help families feel informed, grounded, and cared for from the very beginning. They are a chance for us to slow down, connect, talk through your hopes, fears, options, and all the “wait… one more question” moments. Whether you’re exploring home birth, planning a hospital birth + wanting prenatal care, or just wondering if I’m the right fit, I’m here and we’ll take all the time you need.

A tiny vulnerable ask 🌙

I’ve been pouring a lot of love into creating Celestial Midwifery’s little corner of the internet and finally getting my website live!

While I’m still so grateful to be part of the Génnisi collective, I’m also growing Celestial Midwifery’s own online presence so families looking specifically for me and the way I care can find me a bit more easily.

Unfortunately that means I am once again asking for Google reviews 🤣

If we’ve walked through pregnancy, birth, postpartum, loss, placenta encapsulation, any meaningful season together, or worked together professionally, and you’d be willing to leave a quick Google review for Celestial Midwifery, it would mean more than I can say.

Your words genuinely help families find care that feels safe, informed, deeply supported, and aligned.

I’m so excited to officially begin offering a limited number of prenatal + postpartum care spots for families planning hospital births, but still desiring a more relationship-centered midwifery experience throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period. 🌝

This will look like:

• extended prenatal visits
• routine monitoring throughout pregnancy
• standard prenatal labs and ultrasounds
• holistic + evidence-based education
• informed consent conversations
• nutrition + wellness support
• birth planning + hospital navigation
• a compiled prenatal chart and summary of care to bring to the hospital for continuity with your birth team
• in-home postpartum support and newborn checks
• individualized care throughout the entire journey

While I would not attend the hospital birth itself, this offering creates space for families to receive midwifery-style support before and after birth while building the hospital birth team that feels right for them.

I’ve been seeing midwives globally offer beautiful models of care like this, and I’m so excited to begin bringing something similar to families in our community.

Because I want to keep this experience intentional and relationship-centered, I’ll only be opening a small number of spots initially, so if this sounds aligned for your family, please head to my consultation link in bio to schedule a complimentary call. 🌙
