Today, on Purple Heart Day, we honor all U.S. Veterans who were wounded or gave their lives in combat. Established by General George Washington on Aug. 7, 1782, as the Badge of Military Merit, it remains the oldest military decoration still awarded to American service members.

SCI Garden Group - Then & Now: Throughout Summer, SCI Veterans have garden group at the Milwaukee VA every other week with Recreation Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Dietitians. While gardening, the Veterans are able to safely navigate wheelchairs, work on fine motor skills, and learn about the produce, the benefits, and how to incorporate it into their diets. The produce is divided up so each Veteran can take some home with them.

My Why - As part of Milwaukee VA's Tour of Duty program, VA staff take a moment to write down why they choose to work or stay at the Milwaukee VA.

One employee wrote: "I stay at the VA because although not a Veteran myself, I feel incredibly supported, valued, and appreciated as an RN. The gratitude I receive from my patients for the care I provide, my compassion, and time I spend listening to their stories fills my heart and is a reminder as to why I chose nursing and the VA."

DYK: For the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, trap shooting is an "at home" event. Milwaukee VA SCI Veterans participated in the event last month at the Waukesha County Gun Club.

Milwaukee SCI Veterans have been practicing trap shooting over the past 16 years through Veterans Afield UA, a non-profit founded by U.S. Navy Vietnam Veteran Pat Horvath. "Rally B-EHR," our baseball-themed ambassador for the rollout of the new Electronic Health Record, has been hard at work, along with the entire Milwaukee VA team to go live with the new system in January 2027.
