Part of being Jewish involves being vocal about our opinions. If we are simply talking about opinions, no problem, but when one starts to complain we have to be more careful. Good complaining is that which is for the welfare of others and our communities, as opposed to arguments for the sake of our ego or some selfish need.

In this week’s Torah portion, we read about the rebellion of Korach against Moses and Aaron. Korach’s argument is inspired by his ego and is self-serving. G-d makes it clear that such a rebellion is sinful, and dramatically, Korach and his followers are swallowed up by the land. In contrast to that, our tradition is filled with arguments for the sake of heaven, like those of rabbis Hillel & Shammai.

I leave you this Shabbat with a prayer from a British siddur, based on a passage from Pirke Avot: “May none of us controversies rise up like those of Korach, from ambition and self-seeking. Let them only be for the sake of heaven, like those of Hillel and Shammai.”

Beautiful blooms, fresh air, and time together made for a wonderful day at Boerner Botanical Gardens. Residents enjoyed exploring the gardens, soaking in the scenery, and spending time outdoors surrounded by nature.

An outing to Potawatomi Hotel Casino brought plenty of fun and excitement for our residents! From enjoying the lively atmosphere to hitting the slots—with a few lucky wins along the way—it was a great day out. ‎

Our recent Paint & Sip brought plenty of creativity, laughter, and great company together for a fun afternoon! 🎨 Whether experienced artists or first-time painters, everyone had the chance to unwind, get creative, and enjoy time together.

At the opening of this week’s sedra Behaalotecha (Numbers 8:1-12:16 God commands Aharon: “When you raise up the lamps…” (Behaalotecha et ha‑nerot). The commentator Rashi famously notes that the Torah doesn’t say “light the lamps,” but “raise them up.”

We can help light fires of inspiration among other people, but even more important than that is raising up others in dignity and respect. When those around us feel appreciated and respected, our community grows stronger.

May we raise up those around us, creating a brighter light that will shine forth from all of us."

We spent a beautiful morning outdoors planting flowers and herbs, enjoying the warm weather, and helping beautify the Soref Promenade. It was a wonderful way to spend time outside, connect with nature, and add more color to one of our shared spaces. ‎

A recent visit to the Jewish Museum Milwaukee allowed residents to explore "48 Jews: Layers of Identity" by Lac Lahav—a vibrant exhibit celebrating Jewish identity, culture, and influential figures through powerful artwork and meaningful conversation. The guided tour sparked thoughtful discussion and offered a meaningful way to connect with history, heritage, and creativity.

In this week’s Torah portion, Naso (Numbers 4:21-7:89), we find the famous priestly benediction. The priests offer this threefold blessing to the people.

May the Eternal bless you and watch over you
May the Eternal look kindly to you and be gracious to you
May the Eternal be mindful of you and grant you peace.

The ultimate blessing ends with the wish for peace, something we need in this world. But peace can also refer to our own need for peace of mind. That’s where the first two parts of the blessing come in. Knowing that the Eternal One is watching us, looking at us with kindness and grace, can provide us with the comfort and security we need to find that peace.
