Trauma doesn't always announce itself. Sometimes it just quietly shapes the way you move through the world until you start to wonder why certain things feel so hard.

You don't have to have a diagnosis, a story that sounds serious enough, or a reason that holds up under scrutiny.

If something happened that made the world feel less safe, that's enough.

If big changes feel overwhelming, start small. You don't have to overhaul your life to make a positive difference.

"To me, the heart of therapy is helping people feel heard, understood, and empowered. It’s not about “fixing” anyone, it’s about creating space for growth, self-awareness, and healing. I think one of the biggest benefits is having someone in your corner who helps you make sense of your thoughts and feelings without judgement."

Toni Henry, ALC works in our Mobile office under the supervision of Susan Case, LPS-C. She specializes in working with children, teens and families affected by trauma, grief, or life changes. She is currently accepting new clients in Mobile or online through teletherapy. https://www.collinscounseling.org/counselors/

One of the hardest parts about chronic stress is that eventually it stops feeling like stress.

It just starts feeling like your personality.

“I’m just bad at relaxing.”
“I’m just an overthinker.”
“I just like being prepared.”

Constantly feeling tense, alert, or on edge isn't a character trait. It's often a sign your nervous system has been under stress for a very long time.

Survival mode was never supposed to become your baseline.

If that sounds like you, counseling can help.

Men are almost four times more likely to die by intentional self-inflicted harm than women. They're also far less likely to seek mental health treatment.

One reason is that many men were never taught what emotional distress actually looks like outside of a crisis. They're looking for severe sadness or panic, when the signs are often more subtle.

Things like:
-working constantly to avoid slowing down,
-withdrawing from friends and family,
-irritability or anger,
-loss of motivation,
-increased drinking or substance use,
-exhaustion,
-or feeling emotionally disconnected from a life you used to enjoy.

A lot of men wait until things feel unbearable before reaching out for support. Mental health care does not have to be a last resort.

Meet Joyce Barber, LPC.

Joyce has spent more than 30 years helping people through some of life's hardest experiences, including traumatic events, life transitions, and self-esteem challenges. Much of her career has been devoted to helping children process abuse and begin healing in safe, supportive environments.

Outside of counseling, Joyce previously created and hosted a television show about mental health issues and has trained psychiatrists in courtroom testimony.

She's also performed with the Mobile Opera. And she has two dogs named Baby and Bear, who keep her humble.

Joyce is currently accepting new clients in our Fairhope office and through teletherapy.

Has Love on the Spectrum sent you down a rabbit hole?

For a lot of people - especially adults - it's the first time autism has ever felt relatable. But what you see on TV is one small slice of a very wide spectrum.

If it’s something you’ve been wondering about, talking to the right person can help you find real answers.

Barbara Leigh specializes in autism screenings and support, and she is accepting new clients in our Fairhope office.
