When a child plays the same way, every time, with little interest in pretend play or interactive games, that pattern matters.

It can look like focus or creativity, and repetitive actions can be calming and enjoyable to kids. Take note if it consistently replaces shared play and flexible exploration. Early evaluation and diagnosis can lead to more options and improved outcomes!

For autistic children, the shift into summer break can feel overwhelming. More time at home often means more noise, more choices, and more unpredictability. For parents, it can mean trying to balance work, caregiving, and constant activity without a break.

One way to support both your child and yourself is by focusing on low stimulation activities!

Today we're showing you how to take a color walk! Color walks are one of our favorite activities for nervous system regulation. It’s super easy, costs nothing, and has tons of variations for inclusiveness.

Color walks give your brain a specific task to focus on to help you feel calm and grounded in the present moment.

We'll also explore some variations on the color walk in future reels. Have you tried a texture walk? A special interest scavenger hunt? A stationary search for sounds? Let us know your variations in the comments!

Follow us for more tips and tricks on nervous system regulation (and just plain fun things to do)!

For others, they may simply signal a need for extra support. Either way, taking notice early gives families more options and more time to act.

"Affirmations aren’t just about positive thinking. They help your brain focus on what matters most, so stress feels less overwhelming, and you become more resilient over time. Studies on affirmations have found that they can improve people’s overall well-being, help them feel better about themselves, and reduce anxiety. On top of that, the effects of affirmations are immediate and long-lasting." -Mental Health America
