It may seem like shaving your dog will help keep them cool, but for many breeds, their coat actually helps regulate body temperature and protects their skin from the sun. Double-coated breeds, such as Golden Retrievers, Huskies, German Shepherds, and Australian Shepherds, should generally not be shaved unless recommended by your veterinarian for a medical reason.
Instead, help your dog stay comfortable this summer by:
🌳 Providing plenty of shade and fresh, cool water.
🚶 Walking during the early morning or evening when temperatures are lower.
🪮 Brushing regularly to remove excess undercoat and improve airflow.
❄️ Watching for signs of heat exhaustion, including excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, or collapse.
