Myopia or near sightedness often starts in childhood, and in the past parents and doctors alike thought genetics was the biggest risk for your kid needing to wear glasses. BUT we now know genetics plays a role, but it’s a LOT less of an impact than how kids are growing up in their unique environment and lifestyle. The single biggest thing you can do to reduce the risk your child will need glasses has NOTHING to do if mom and dad need glasses too - it’s all about getting outside. Studies show spending at least 2️⃣ hours outdoors daily can lower a child’s overall risk of developing myopia by up to 50% compared to children who spend less than an hour outside.

What else can you do to reduce your child’s risk? Hold reading material or screens further away from the face (the sweet spot is called the Harmon distance, and if you bend your arm at the elbow parallel to the floor, that’s as close as your near activity should get) and getting a consistent 8 hours of regular sleep every night both help reduce myopia risk. Routine comprehensive eye exams are essential to detect the early beginnings of eye muscle issues that will lead to needing glasses so they can be addressed before the eyes begin to decline, and to correct myopia at its earliest amounts to slow the worsening of childhood prescriptions that can lead to extremely high adult prescriptions.

When a child’s vision gets worse, it’s because their eyeball is growing LONGER! Just like our legs and arms, our eyes grow as we age too. But if that growth is faster than normal, a child ends up with a longer eyeball, which causes blurry distance vision or myopia. The worst part - as long as you are still growing, your eye can keep getting longer and longer. That’s why children with myopia get worse on average by 0.50-0.75D every year. BUT we don’t have to watch and do nothing. FDA approved glasses and contact lenses can correct myopia and slow down prescription progression by slowing down growth of the eye. Want o learn more? So what are floaters anyway? About 80% of the eye is filled with the vitreous - a clear, gel-like substance. It maintains the eye’s spherical shape and supports the growing eye. As the body ages, this gel often liquefies and separates from the retina, causing little clumps, specks and swirls of jelly to free float inside the eye and make you see floaters.

A large floater or a bunch of new ones blocking your vision can be a serious problem! Bleeding inside the eye and retinal tears can both cause floaters. We’re a phone call away if you feel you are seeing new onset flashes or floaters!

A new study found that “more than one in five Americans haven’t visited the optometrist in at least a year (22%) and another 15% ‘can’t remember’ the last time they did so.” The survey of 2,000 US adults “looked at how respondents understand the importance of eye health and preventative care.” Across all generations, 91% of respondents said they “care about preventative health, but only 55% commit to annual exams.” The survey also “revealed that nearly a quarter of Americans aren’t aware that a comprehensive eye exam can reveal larger health issues (22%).” AOA President Jacqueline “Jacquie” M. Bowen, OD, said, “Changes in eye health can happen gradually and without clear symptoms, which is why routine, comprehensive eye exams are so important for catching eye health issues, and over 270 diseases, earlier. Annual eye exams help to protect long-term health.”
