Is it ADHD, autism, anxiety, a learning disability - or more than one?

A child who avoids homework, seems distracted, becomes overwhelmed, or performs inconsistently may be struggling for very different reasons. The same behavior can reflect attention difficulties, anxiety, an academic skill deficit, sensory overload, executive-functioning challenges, or a combination of factors.

Our latest article explains how psychologists distinguish overlapping concerns by considering the whole child—not relying on a single symptom, questionnaire, or test score.

Learn:

• Why these conditions can look similar
• How ADHD, autism, anxiety, and learning disabilities differ
• Why more than one condition may be present
• What a comprehensive evaluation examines
• When coaching or an evaluation may be the appropriate next step

Is it ADHD, a learning disability—or both?

A capable child may understand complex ideas yet still struggle with reading, writing, organization, attention, or completing schoolwork. These difficulties are not signs of laziness or a lack of intelligence.

Our new article explains:

• How ADHD and learning disabilities can affect school performance differently
• Why the two conditions sometimes occur together
• Signs parents and teachers may notice
• How a comprehensive evaluation can clarify a child’s learning profile and support needs

Need testing accommodations for college, an entrance exam, or a professional licensing exam?

Students and professionals may seek accommodations when ADHD, dyslexia, a learning disability, autism, anxiety, or other factors affect performance under standard testing conditions. Some schools and testing organizations require updated evaluation documentation when reviewing requests for extended time, additional breaks, reduced-distraction testing, or other supports.

Bright Future Psychology provides individualized testing-accommodations evaluations for:

• College and university disability services
• SAT, ACT, PSAT, and AP exams
• GRE, GMAT, LSAT, and MCAT
• USMLE and other medical examinations
• Florida Bar and other professional licensing exams

An evaluation may document a diagnosis, objective findings, current functional limitations, and clinically appropriate recommendations.

Appointments are generally available within 1–2 weeks, with virtual and in-person options when appropriate.

Some bright children can seem inattentive, bored, inconsistent, or unmotivated at school. Sometimes that reflects giftedness. Sometimes it reflects ADHD. And sometimes, a child is both gifted and has ADHD.

Because giftedness and ADHD can overlap, it is not always easy to tell what is really driving a child’s behavior or school difficulties. A child may lose interest when work is too easy, become deeply focused on preferred topics, struggle with organization, or perform very differently depending on the task.

Our latest article explains some of the similarities and differences between giftedness and ADHD, why they can be confused, and how a comprehensive evaluation can help clarify a child’s strengths, attention, executive functioning, and learning needs.

Gifted children can still struggle.
Some children may have advanced reasoning, vocabulary, creativity, or problem-solving skills while also experiencing ADHD, autism, dyslexia, anxiety, executive functioning challenges, or another learning difference. These students are often described as twice-exceptional, or 2e.

Because their strengths can sometimes mask their difficulties, and their difficulties can sometimes hide their giftedness, 2e children may be misunderstood or overlooked.

Our latest article explains what twice-exceptionality can look like, why gifted children may still struggle in school, and how a comprehensive evaluation can help identify both strengths and areas where support may be needed.

- How to reserve funds in EMA.
- What happens after you reserve funds.
- Direct payment and reimbursement options.

Families using Step Up for Students scholarships often ask whether their funds can be used for psychological testing, gifted testing, ADHD or autism evaluations, dyslexia assessments, or other educational services.

When should you consider gifted testing for your child?
Sometimes the signs are obvious, such as rapid learning, advanced reasoning, intense curiosity, or needing more academic challenge.

Other times, the picture is more complicated. A very bright child may also struggle with attention, organization, reading, writing, or inconsistent school performance.

We recently updated our guide explaining signs that gifted testing may be helpful, what testing can tell parents, and how giftedness can overlap with ADHD or other learning differences.

Parents often begin considering gifted testing when a child seems to learn unusually quickly, shows advanced reasoning, becomes intensely interested in certain topics, or appears to need more academic challenge.

What does an IQ test actually tell you about your child?
Parents often hear terms like IQ testing, cognitive testing, gifted testing, or the WISC-V and are not always sure what they mean.

An IQ test can help identify a child’s cognitive strengths, areas that may require more effort, and whether their abilities are relatively even or very different across areas such as verbal reasoning, problem-solving, working memory, and processing speed.

We put together a new parent-friendly guide explaining what IQ testing measures, what the WISC-V looks at, and why one overall IQ score does not always tell the whole story.

How do you know if your child may be gifted?

Parents often notice things like unusually strong memory, rapid learning, advanced questions, intense curiosity, or deep interests. But gifted children do not always look like high achievers. Some may struggle with attention, organization, reading, writing, or school performance.

We put together a new guide explaining common signs of giftedness and when testing may be helpful.
