Articulation practice doesn’t have to happen at the table!

During a session focused on the /f/ sound, we paired the book ‘Forts’ with a hands-on fort building activity.

Embedding articulation targets into motivating, play-based activities allows children to practice their sounds in meaningful contexts while staying engaged in the activity. It also helps us move beyond isolated practice and begin using target sounds in more functional communication.

Speech therapy can be purposeful AND play-based. 💙

One of my favorite parts of being a pediatric SLP is discovering what lights each child up and using that to make therapy meaningful.

Every child is motivated by something different. For one of my clients, it’s catching lizards during our sessions. 🦎 So this week, I brought a lizard-themed story filled with her articulation targets. Suddenly, practicing speech sounds wasn’t just “work.” It connected to something she genuinely loved.

When we build therapy around a child’s interests, we create more engagement and more motivation leading to progress. That’s one of my favorite parts of what I get to do every day. 💚

4 ways I used this activity in speech-language therapy this week:

🦀 Targeted /s/ production by sorting sea creatures based on where we find them: in the “sea” or on the “sand”

🐠 Built semantic and syntactic skills by using complete sentences to compare and contrast sea animals

🐚 Increased understanding of concept vocabulary by following directions (e.g., spatial, descriptive, and category concepts)

🌊 Encouraged functional communication by requesting “more” and specific sea animals

It may look like we’re just playing, but every game has a purpose 🦆

By following each child’s interests, I create meaningful opportunities to build communication in a way that feels natural and fun. Whether we’re working on articulation, language, pragmatics, or fluency, every activity is intentionally designed to support each child’s goals.

The best part? They usually don’t even realize they’re working. That’s the power of play-based speech-language therapy 🦆

This is a wordy post, but it’s an important one.

One of the most common misconceptions about speech-language therapy is that we’re “just playing.” But play is the therapy. While a child is engaged in something meaningful and motivating, an SLP is simultaneously modeling language, expanding communication, building interaction skills, supporting comprehension, creating opportunities to communicate, and so much more.

This post breaks down some of what is happening behind the scenes during play and why play-based therapy is such a powerful way to support development.
