You are the person who has the most direct access to what you see, hear, feel, think, and experience.

Pay attention to what you know before looking to someone else to tell you what happened.

When things get hard, how do you treat yourself?

Self-soothing is part of how we learn to support ourselves when we are distressed, overwhelmed, frustrated, or just having a really hard day.

And if you are like the majority of us, you probably get enough shame, blame, and criticism from other people.

Most of us know how to support someone we care about when they are struggling. We are often much harder on ourselves when we are the ones under pressure.

Our latest A Better Us article explores internalized peer support and what happens when we give ourselves some of the same support we readily give others.

Sometimes the boundaries we need most are with ourselves.

It might mean deciding when you have worked enough for the day. Not returning to a conversation that repeatedly causes harm. Giving yourself permission to say no without spending hours questioning the decision. Or noticing when you are pushing yourself beyond what you actually have to give.

Boundaries are one way we communicate that our needs, limits, and well-being deserve our attention too.

Renewing your relationship with yourself includes learning how to protect that relationship.

Avoiding conflict. Staying quiet. Keeping other people happy. Reading the room. Overthinking what you said. Preparing for what might go wrong.

It is easy to look at these behaviors today and wonder, “Why am I like this?”

A different question might be more useful: “What did this behavior once do for me?”

Many of our behavioral strategies developed because they worked. They helped us navigate relationships, environments, and experiences when we needed them. The challenge comes when an old strategy continues showing up long after our circumstances have changed.

Understanding where a behavior came from does not mean you have to keep it. It gives you more information to decide what you want to do next.

Renewing your relationship with yourself can begin with understanding yourself rather than judging yourself.
