The History of the United States flag began
on June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress
passed the Flag Resolution, establishing the
first official flag with 13 stars and 13 stripes
to represent the original colonies.

Over the years, the flag evolved as new states joined the Union, adding stars to symbolize growth while retaining
the stripes. The design we recognize today—with 50
stars—was finalized in 1960 after Hawaii became
the 50th state. The national holiday, Flag Day,
was first celebrated unofficially by Bernard J.
Cigrand in 1885, a schoolteacher who promoted
the idea of honoring the flag.

Flag Day was officially recognized by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 and later established as a permanent
national observance by Congress in 1949 to commemorate the flag’s adoption and its meaning as a symbol of American unity
and freedom under God.

Today we honor the flag and remember what our nation
stands for.
