Back-to-school anxiety does not always sound like:
“I’m scared.”
Sometimes it sounds like:
“My stomach hurts.”
“I can’t sleep.”
“I don’t want to go.”
Sometimes it looks like irritability, clinginess, perfectionism, headaches, nausea, tears at drop-off, procrastination, or a teenager who insists they are completely fine while their body is telling a different story.
And the form changes with age.
A younger child may struggle with separation. A teenager may become intensely concerned about belonging or performance. A college student may be dealing with homesickness, sleep disruption, academic pressure, social anxiety, digestive symptoms, or the strange overwhelm of suddenly managing everything independently.
The physical symptoms are still real even when anxiety is involved.
My newest article looks at back-to-school anxiety from elementary school through college, anticipatory anxiety, the brain-gut connection, and where hypnosis may fit as complementary support.

Stomachaches. Sleepless nights. Irritability. Separation distress. Perfectionism. Overwhelm. Anxiety can begin showing up in the body long before a student has words for it.
