In observance of Memorial Day, Community Alternatives Inc. will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026. Regular business hours will resume on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

Words Matter and Words Can Heal

Words shape how people feel, how they are treated, and whether they seek help.

For individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, language matters even more. Labels can limit—but respectful, person-centered language can empower.

Instead of focusing on behaviors, we can ask:
“What is this person experiencing?”
“How can I support them?”

When we speak with dignity and compassion, we create space for trust, healing, and connection.

Early Support Matters

Early support can change everything—especially for children and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Caregivers and families are often the first to notice when something feels “off.” Changes in sleep, mood, behavior, or communication may be signs that additional support is needed.

For individuals with IDD, these signs can look different—and that’s why awareness matters.

Acting early doesn’t just address challenges—it builds confidence, stability, and long-term well-being.

Asking for help is not a weakness. It’s advocacy.
