𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲. 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲.

While looking through old Oklahoma City newspapers, we came across a Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper listing from 1968.

The phone number caught our attention:

VI 8-3744

At the time, telephone numbers were often written using named exchanges. On a telephone dial, the letters “VI” represented the numbers 8 and 4.

VI 8-3744 became 848-3744.

And today?

(405) 848-3744.

The building has changed. Oklahoma City has changed. The way we communicate has certainly changed.

But for at least 58 years, families have been able to reach Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper using the same seven digits.

One of the fastest-growing cemeteries in America isn’t a cemetery.

It’s the landfill.

𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝗵𝗻-𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺?

This 1981 newspaper clipping hanging in our funeral home tells part of that story.

Ed L. Hahn and his wife, Chester, established the Ed L. Hahn Undertaking Company in the early 1900s. Their daughter, Lelia Hahn Cook, continued the family tradition, and the Cook name became part of the funeral home's story.

That legacy continued into a third generation with Lelia's sons, Vernon Cook II and Edward Cook, pictured with their mother in this article.

We love looking back at pieces like this, not just because they show us what Hahn-Cook looked like years ago, but because they remind us that the name on our building represents real people, a real family and generations dedicated to serving Oklahoma City.

More than a century later, we're proud to continue the tradition they began.

Still working.
Still laughing.
Still answering, “I’m fine.”

𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀.

Tucked away at Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper are original funeral records dating back at least as far as 1915.

Page after page holds names, dates and handwritten details from families served more than a century ago. There’s something remarkable about opening one of these books and realizing that every name inside represents a family who once entrusted their loved one to our care.

These books are more than old records. They’re pieces of Oklahoma City history, and pieces of ours.

And yes... now that we’ve started looking, we’re a little curious just how far back those shelves go.

Grief doesn’t always look like grief.

Sometimes it looks like going to work.
Making dinner.
Laughing at something funny.
Answering “I’m fine” and meaning it in that moment.

And sometimes, without warning, it feels like the loss happened yesterday.

There is no schedule for missing someone.
No deadline for being “okay.”
No right way to grieve someone you loved.

This National Grief Awareness Day, may we give ourselves, and each other, a little more grace.
