This weekend was a major milestone outside the clinic. My Sweet Adelines barbershop chorus competed in the Region 17 competition, where we won first place in the small division and secured third place overall. This exciting placement means we even have the potential to compete at the International level in Seattle in the next year or two!
Being a vocalist directly impacts my work as a Speech Language Pathologist. Singing barbershop harmony requires intense vocal control, stamina, and breath support. Because I rely on my own voice for performance, I have a deep, personal understanding of how the upper airway functions under pressure.
This background makes me a sharper and more empathetic clinician. When I work with patients on voice and breathing, I am looking beyond the basic anatomy. I know exactly what it feels like to need your voice to function perfectly. This passion for vocal health is a huge reason why I expanded my mobile FEES practice across Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan to include specialized voice diagnostics. I am currently getting accustomed to my new Patcom stroboscopy unit, which allows me to evaluate vocal fold vibration and airway function with incredible precision.
Whether I am diagnosing a swallowing disorder, managing an upper airway issue, or helping someone restore their voice, my life as a singer informs every clinical decision I make. I am incredibly proud of my chorus and ready to bring that same dedication to my patients this week.
