Heartland Therapeutic Riding, Inc. Heartland Therapeutic Riding is a therapeutic riding center serving children and adults with disabilities in the Kansas City area, since 1978.

Heartland Therapeutic Riding, Inc. was founded because of the determination and drive of one mother who refused to accept that an individual with a disability should be excluded from horseback riding, because of their diagnosis. Literally proving where there is a will, there is a way. In 1977, Jean Baum established Heartland Therapeutic Riding after horseback riding was suggested as a potentially

helpful (future) activity for her nine-month old daughter, who had special needs. Jean learned more about the benefits of therapeutic riding from Lida McGowan, who founded the Cheff Center for therapeutic riding, in Minnesota. After attending the lecture, Jean was convinced that the Kansas City area would greatly benefit from this type of center. After discovering a staunch opposition to the very idea of individuals with disabilities riding horses, Jean established the first therapeutic riding center in Kansas City. was one of the first therapeutic riding centers in the country, and has earned the status of PATH, Intl. Premier Accredited Center. Heartland currently serves more than 100 incredible riders and has a team of more than 120 amazing volunteers, yet we have never forgotten all of the hard work, determination and dedication that it took to get here. We are committed to helping individuals with disabilities through equine assisted activities and therapies. We strive to change lives, one ride at a time.

Heartland Therapeutic Riding is looking for a part-time Barn Staff member to join our team!

We’re looking for someone who has a passion for horses and wants to be part of a close-knit, hardworking team that helps make our Equine-Assisted Services possible. Barn staff play a vital role in caring for our herd and keeping our facility running smoothly!

📚🐴 Educational Wednesday: Are Horses Really “Emotional Sponges”?

Have you ever walked into the barn feeling stressed and noticed your horse seemed a little more on edge? There may be a reason for that!

Horses are incredibly perceptive animals. They can pick up on changes in our body language, breathing, movement, and overall demeanor. While we often call them “emotional sponges,” it’s important to remember that horses aren’t literally absorbing our emotions. Instead, they are highly responsive to the signals we are giving them and often reflect our own emotions and headspace.

So, what might that look like?

😌 When we are calm:
A relaxed horse may lower their head, soften their expression, lick and chew, or take a long, deep breath.

😰 When we are anxious or agitated:
A horse may become more alert. You might see them raise their head, move their feet, paw, dance around, or frequently look around to figure out what’s happening.

This is why we often encourage our clients, riders, and volunteers to take a moment to breathe before stepping into a session. Take a deep breath, leave the frustrations of the day at the door, and give yourself a chance to reset.

🐴 Your emotional state can influence the horse's experience—and their response can influence you right back!

Learning to recognize what we're feeling and how we're communicating those feelings through our bodies is an important part of building a successful partnership with a horse!

• This handsome guy has a background as a Saddle Seat show horse. 🏆
• He is VERY expressive—especially when it comes to his eyes. You can practically read his mind sometimes! 😂
• He has a gorgeous deep black coat, but there’s a twist… During the summertime, the sun turns his black coat a beautiful brownish color. ☀️🤎
