National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is tomorrow, Oct. 24. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration created National Prescription Drug Takeback Day as a way to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of prescription drug disposal. It is also an opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths. It takes place twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Friday, October 16 is National Mammography Day! Tomorrow, all women who have not had a mammogram within the past 12 months are reminded to get one scheduled. October 13 is Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day! Metastatic disease is classified as Stage IV and indicates that cancerous cells have metastasized (spread) beyond the breast and nearby lymph nodes to distant sites in the body, most commonly, the bones, lungs, liver or brain. Although Breast Cancer Awareness Month has been recognized since 1985, it wasn't until 2009 that this day was officially declared to recognize those facing a metastatic breast cancer diagnosis. The goal is to raise the public's awareness of the challenges faced by people living with Stage IV breast cancer.

October is Liver Cancer Awareness Month! Hearing you have liver cancer is understandably troubling because the liver is indispensable to your body. Each year in October, groups aim to educate the public about the risk factors for developing liver cancer and the types of new treatments that are becoming available. Primary liver cancer is a disease in which cancer cells form in the tissues of the liver. Cancer that develops in other parts of the body and metastasizes (spreads) to the liver is not primary liver cancer. It's important to recognize the difference between these two and the different treatment approaches required.

October is American Pharmacists Month. The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) designates October as American Pharmacists Month to acknowledge the invaluable contributions pharmacists and pharmacy team members make to health care. For people diagnosed with cancer, they may see an oncology pharmacist who is specially trained to understand the medications used to treat cancer and blood disorders. Medications to treat cancer are not always available at traditional pharmacies and must be supplied by a specialty pharmacy where an oncology pharmacist usually works.

September is Pain Awareness Month. During Pain Awareness Month in September, people with cancer are reminded that doctors have multiple ways to lessen the pain of the disease and/or its treatment. It's important to realize that a high percentage of cancer-related pain can be successfully managed to some degree, so have a conversation with your medical team as soon as it occurs. If pain is unrelieved, ask to be referred to a pain specialist for additional options. Keep pain management a top priority throughout your treatment and recovery.
